Local boxers in fistic fury @ UPs tonight!
The card, which is a fundraiser by the Iron Fist Boxing Gym and G-Smooth Music to raise money for a breakfast programme at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), gets underway at 8:30pm with the main event being a middleweight contest between boxing instructor Julian Brown and a fighter from the United Kingdom.
Brown is not familiar with his opponent whom he knows only as ‘Marcus’ and said his plan would be to allow Marcus to make the mistake and then attack. “I have my 'bob and weave' and movements,” said Brown who noted that his last fight was against a heavyweight fighter whom he sent to the canvas.
“He felt like he could beat me so we went at it but he was the one on the ground,” said Brown.
The main event, the lone professional bout, will be a 6 round contest.
Destroyer vs Detonator!
The bout’s heavyweight contest promises much fireworks as Andrew ‘The Destroyer’ Lettsome will be coming up against Glenroy ‘The Detonator’ Charles.
Mr Lettsome told Virgin Islands News Online this morning, April 18, 2015 that he was just “feeling calm” and looking for a knockout in his debut fight in the squared ring.
He urged his opponent to come out with his “A game”.
Long arms vs fast arms
Another amateur matchup on the 7-fight card will be between bantamweights D’moi Martin and Jhkoy Pemberton.
According to Martin, his opponent has a longer reach but he (Martin) is light on his feet and will be relying on that as well as his ability to let his hands go. “I believe I have very fast hands but people say I have a hard punch as well.
“I want the crowd to enjoy the fight so I wouldn’t be chasing a knockout until in the second round of the fight which is for three rounds,” a confident Martin told this news site.
A welterweight contest will see Romario Morgan and Kenrick Thomas trading blows.
Card getting good support
Meanwhile, Mr Brown said the ring is almost complete with just the canvas to be laid. “It looks very professional. People donated wood and other materials for it, so that is going well.”
Mr Brown also expressed a “big shout out” to the Owner of UPs Cineplex, Mr Elton Leonard, who he said was kind enough to let them use the venue for free.
The boxing instructor said other support has come from the Ministry of Education, Elmore Stoutt High School and Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull among others.
As for support tonight, Mr Brown expects a good turnout. "The wider society has been supporting us a lot because they say it is a good thing we are doing for the students of the Elmore Stoutt High School. It is also a good avenue for some children to learn discipline and be involved in sports."
