PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI - Many stories have been frequently told of the falls in life and "the how you get back up" that determines where you go as you set out to achieve dreams and goals.

This morning April 15, 2013 at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, motivational speaker and Talk Show host Mrs Tamara Archibald-Gill literally took a hard fall when she made he way on stage prancing in full energy and zest to deliver her presentation 'The leader in you' to a partially filled auditorium of students at the opening day of the "Right Start Programme".

The programme is done annually by the Elmore Stoutt High School/H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in collaboration with other partners as an activity to give senior students of the High School a  guide to the world of work.

Mrs Archibald-Gill did the first presentation of the day and starting with much style and energy to set a pace for her interaction with the students as she made her way down the isles and on to the stage. She took a really hard fall when she stumbled, not noticing the speaker monitors. Despite the hard hit, which resulted in her microphone pitching off stage and her notes scattered, she got up, shook it off and used the painful experience to influence her presentation.

This was in no doubt taken positively and aided tremendously in her reaching out to her audience. "Wow. that was really hard and it did hurt but you know what, in this life you will have falls, not necessarily literally as I just did, but its how or if you get back up that matters," she said.

The Organisers of the programme would not have made a bad choice when inviting Mrs Archibald-Gill to speak on the topic as she applied her experience and knowledge as a teacher, blended it with her experiences as a motivational speaker and coated it with the stories of her life's successes to get the message of the importance of 'PAC' - Passionate, Authentic and Consistent - and their importance in one's life especially in leadership roles.

During the opening ceremony of the two-day workshop, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture Dr Marcia Potter took time out to address the students preparation for the workshop. She apologized for the absence of Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn, who she said is currently out of the country.

Examining The theme Preparation for Life ... the Right to Lead, Ms Potter applauded the organising team for going in that direction as she said it fits right in with what the Ministry of Education has been doing in so many of its initiatives as it strives to create a culture of excellence.

"Today’s seminar is an important one for you students as you prepare to leave the confines of secure school walls to enter the world of work or go on to higher education. Many of you are still unsettled as to exactly where you want to be - should I work first and then study after? What do I really want to be?, Am I ready to leave home and go overseas?"

"For some the answer seems to be easy as you have been thinking about it a long time and for others just the thought of getting out on your own, to make your own decisions make you eager to see graduation come and pass. Whatever your decisions I assure you that the things you are about to hear in this seminar are going to be important in making the next step," said Dr Potter.

"Whether you decide now or later to go into the world of work, preparation for that interview is going to be paramount," she further stated.

She challenged students to think long and hard about their decisions, to pay attention to what is imparted to them through the seminar as it is important to be emotionally, spiritually, socially and educationally strong as they move to the next stage in their journey of life.

According to Dr Potter, as the Ministry responsible for scholarships, far too often they hear the cries of students not being able to complete studies or needing to change majors or being unable to take on the stresses of being away from home and quitting or needing to take time off.

Referring to the Youth Employment Register, Dr Potter said, "What was astonishing for me is the lack of preparation of many of our young people to enter the world of work - unsure of what a resume should look like, unprepared for the interview and in some cases unwilling to take jobs which start you from the bottom. Therefore I reiterate the importance of paying attention throughout this seminar. I also want to encourage all of you today that even with a first degree, there is nothing wrong with starting at the bottom and working your way up as there is nothing better than getting to the top knowing that you know all the ins and outs of the positions below you. I also want to suggest to you that as you prepare to enter this global market where the competition is high and getting tougher, that you must be the best you can be - be willing to work hard, be willing to do a honest day’s work for a honest day’s pay. Short cuts are not the answer. Work hard in college and then start your jobs to get the experience."

Acting Principal of the Elmore Stoutt High School Mr Wade W. Tobin said students would be exposed to a number of interactive sessions over the two days of the programme. He noted that previously the programme was for students of his school but a conscious decision was made to extend it to all the high schools in the Territory.

It was very unfortunate she fell but show character and courage to stand up and give her presentation. The essence of a leader. These are what our young adults need around then people who are not afraid to fall and get back up.

    Awesome job taml.
