ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Local fisherman and bush cutter, Mariano “Fed up” Farrington says he is frustrated waiting for an election promise of assistance for the acquisition of a fishing boat that would significantly improve not only his living conditions but that of the many young idle persons in the community.

In an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online on Thursday September 22, 2016, Farrington said to make matters even worse it appears that there is a selection of persons the National Democratic Party (NDP) government has chosen to stretch out its hands to and he may very well not be among them.

“I don’t know what them guys doing, seems like they all fraud, they just go in and tell you they going to help you and then they blow you under the mat like dirt,” he lamented.

Farrington believes the acquiring of the boat would help to make a difference in the community, especially among young persons.

“It would have improved my life a lot because I love fishing and I could go fishing, it has some other young boys in the neighbourhood who are doing nothing, who I could take them up and teach them a lot about fishing. So it would benefit me and a lot of people.”

According to the self-employed bush cutter, the boat is going at a deal of $4,500 and after several attempts to follow up with the promised help only landed him $300 in August of this year.
“Three hundred can’t help me,” he bemoaned.

Farrington said the boat that he intends to buy is sitting on the side of the road getting old and day by day he is becoming more and more depressed.

“I would like them to help me because I need help.”

The man told this news site that one of the elected representatives he spoke to on the matter and who promised to help him is Junior Minister for Tourism and At Large Representative Hon Archibald C. Christian.

Hon Christian did not respond to our calls and texts up to time of publication.

Hmmm, well people put them there, but where's the money to help our people? The election before last the NDP administration lashed @ the country how them broke the country but still when them went in office they found more than $28 Million, now the election last year them lash at the country that the now Chairman of the VIP Julian Fraser wouldn't make a good leader and the trap was baited, set and the people believed for how Julian was painted black but here today people are seeing that that's was just another way to when the government for the present leader is too nice.

Why should Government buy him a fishing boat?

So why the government give the bankrupt airline 7 million dollars?
        • nonsense (26/09/2016, 10:44) Like (20) Dislike (6) Reply
Because it's something that if it works out, will benefit the Territory. All governments spend millions annually on airlift so try again.

So his fishing won't benefit the territory? But an airline that already failed & hasn't changed their business model will? Is everything too good for locals? Many of you NDP bloggers get assistance from the government although you don't qualify for welfare assistance but a man who is genuinely trying and just needs a helping jump start isn't even worthy of being considered in your opinions. The US gov would assist him and half of you are upset that you live here instead of there. A government that doesn't help it's people to life a better life and sustainable development isn't worth spit.

Good question, but this qiestion can be asked another way: why should government pay these guys to live in their own houses?

So everybody with a story should get Government's money? He needs $4500, why isn't he on the radio seeking help from the public? Why doesn't he get a sponsor sheet and go around soliciting donations? Just like he complain to VINO, why didn't he ask VINO to publish a plea for assistance and outline his plans, needs so we the public can help him? This thing about Government just dishing out cash to everyone who wants it has to stop. I need a bus to Taxi in, it's worth $50,000 but I getting a deal wt $30K. I going call Mark and Myron tomorrow see when I can get the check. SMH.

well I agree with this guy and let me just say that there is a little island that would make me happy that is for sale and a few of the local youth can come and sit on my island once the government buys it for me. This must be a joke, the guy expects the government to buy him a boat, forget the island I want a boat to go fishing in as well, so do lots of people but we save and work for these things not expect handouts.

On a lighter not why doesn't the guy make a deal with the boat owner if it's just sitting there to repay them as he sells his fish to the complex or is it just a fishing expedition for a free boat

What am I hearing? Government supposed to buy boat for people? Government supposed to point you to where you can get money to go buy boat. This is not a welfare state. Learn to work and save money and then go and invest. People need to stop pushing 'shetty' promises to people that can't be filled. Each man in the BVI, except the indigent and poor, is responsible for him or herself. Get your off your poo-poo and go find or make work. NDP or VIP is not responsible for your needs. They provide the means for you to earn a living, and go out and make that living. Too much beggars in the place getting lazy, greedy and ungrateful.

Mr. Farrington, I laud your determination to work for yourself in an industry that you love. Indeed, young persons are needed in fishing. However, I strongly believe that it is not the government's role to fund your private enterprise. Here are some possible options for funding you may want to explore:

    1. You might wish to secure funding through a bank loan or assistance from family members. You will then be able to pay back in reasonable amounts from your earnings.
    2. Perhaps, you may wish to go to the Department of Trade for guidance on avenues for financing and sustaining your business.
    3. If my memory serves me well, a few years ago a resident billionaire offered a programme to assist persons who wished to start small businesses. If it is still available, not only would you have access to a soft loan but invaluable business know-how as well.
    4. If that boat is just sitting on the side of the road deteriorating, would it not be in the owner's interest to let you have it and pay him in installments? You should try to make some arrangement with him. However, this would require much trust in you to honour your side of the bargain and repay as per your agreement. Are you someone whom he should trust, or would you give him some excuse or run-around after you have been given the boat as to why you cannot find the money to pay him?

You strike me as being an enthusiastic young man, brimming with ideas. Though, you should sit and assess what you can or cannot reasonably achieve in the near future. A chat with some of the older fisherfolk or persons at the Fisheries Department or Conservation and Fisheries can be of much help to you.

In future, do not weigh your vote on a promise.

I wish you all the best!

This is the biggest problem in the BVI, a Government is only good or bad based on what they do for you personally. If he gets a check tomorrow then NDP will be the best thing since maubi, nito chicken and the whore house.

Promise what, they're all foolish and backwards. Even when they do get Government money too many of them end up in the Spanish Bars and spend it all on those girls. This country is becoming a big cesspool because of the nastiness and selfishness. The boys on the block are a perfect example of this. They want to be up and down flossing in the biggest boat, rides and women but when you hear them crying about how bad the Government treating them and things hard. Hard? They know hard?

If a Minister say he is not hand to mouth ,why don't he give someone that is hand to mouth the catering job at the house of assembly which he have for years`,i think that will make a lot of sense..This guy trying to get some help and the public wants to say this and that and not telling the Ministers who is getting salaries ,allowances, perks and still lining their pockets with their businesses with the government funding...We need to address that problem and give the guy a break because government give away 7 mil for a plane what ain't even start manufacturing yet,but this guy is showing the public what he is buying.Only the NDP and their cronies should live like Kings and Queens ,life is not fear at all,l we voting 'With Our Mouth Push Up Next Time"

It seems to me they could of buy the boat for the brother and have a payment plan sign with him for it seems every Project Gov. take on been over spent on at least we would get fish out of this for we know what the brother wanted but 95% of this country don't know what the DEAL is with BVI Airways.
