ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Althea Scatliffe Primary School held of a concerted challenge from St George's Primary to lift the BD Basketball Inter Primary School Championship with a 25-23 win on Saturday December 1, 2012.

Despite starting as pre game favourites the Althea Scatliffe team found the shorthanded St George's, who only had five players and no replacements, tenaciously clinging onto to their own dreams of victory. They even had a chance to send the game into overtime when with 7.3 seconds left on the clock the unfortunate Kiandre Clarke missed two free throws that would have tied the game at 25-25.

During the game, each time ASPS pulled ahead St George's hit back to stay in contention.

The score at the end of the 1st quarter was 9-5 to ASPS, by half time it was just 11-9 and by the start of the final period the score was 15-14.

With the clock showing just 1.42 left, ASPS had pulled ahead to 21-17. Clarke then hit 1 of 2 free throws to make it a 3 point game. Daundre Penn nailed 2 free throws with 50.9 left to make it 22-20 and the ASPS nerve ends jangled.

Levons then silenced the warning bells by hitting both his free throws with 48.5 remaining to open a safety margin at 23-20 and despite an exchange of points at both ends, including Isiah Thomas’ two for two effort from the free throw line ASPS were able to hold on for the victory, but only just.

“It was a very exciting final, we have been trying to get the kids playing at a higher level and I think we achieved that” commented Rhennie Phipps, who is one of the BD organising committee members. “It was disappointing St George's only had five, but they played a beautiful game and I hope they come back encouraged next year.”

Phipps had also been very pleased with the way the season had unfolded , but noted they still had improvements to make. “We had some really good games, both parents and coaches have been m ore involved, which we need to see more of, but it’s been a great season.”

The Opening Game back in early November saw Alexandrina Maduro downed by St. George's 25-14 with Jaheem Chadwick leading the way for St George's with 5 points, 14 rebounds and 3 steals.
