ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Phillipe Leroy held off Orano Andrews last Sunday June 22, 2013 to win the BVI Mountain Bike Club’s Pockwood Pond Surprise.

12 racers came out for the Pockwood Pond Surprise race, which started at Mulligan’s at Nanny Cay then headed West, went around Steele Point and then back over Belmont before rejoining the West End road. The riders then headed back East, over the very steep Towers hill, then rejoining the coast road with a straight shot finish into the strong headwind to Mulligan’s.

The race started quickly with Anthony Spencer making an early break. However, Spencer was soon reeled in by the pack. As the lead group started around Steele Point, the skies opened and it started to feel like a real mountain bike race with mud, rain and wind being the order of the day. Disaster struck for reigning Tour De Tortola champion Orano Andrews when he broke his chain after the initial incline at Steele Point, but after a quick fix (assisted graciously by fellow racer Jude Kinkead), Andrews was back in the hunt chasing down leader Phillipe Leroy.

In the mid pack there were some switching of places between Spencer, Dave Kinkead and Gareth Thomas. Dave, the most improved racer of the season to date, showed good bike handling skills on the descents in the wet.

Slightly further back, Alistair Abrehart was unfortunate with a flat tire and Adrian Dale soldiered on and finished the race despite losing his brakes early.

how exciting. All the more reason to keep Steele Pt and smugglers natural and discourage traffic for recreational use. This is part of the adventure and there is no need for "commercial" development.
