ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Both Fearless and the Legs duly completed Championship Series sweeps in the BVI Basketball Federation's “Short and Sweet, Back on our Feet” tournament conclusion on Saturday July 26, 2014, in the Multi Purpose Sports Complex.

First up was Fearless, the defending Champions, against And One, with the final score a very comfortable 100-75. The victory gave Fearless, who were ahead from the third minute of the first quarter to the last minute of the fourth, a 2-0 series sweep and a second successive Championship.

The first quarter had ended 25-13 and the second began with And One eating away into the lead and actually get to within four points halfway through the second period, before Fearless reopened the gap to close out the first half 46-41 ahead.

The point’s gap hovered between four and six during the opening salvos of the second half and then after some quick fire play by Fearless the lead increased to 11. With the teams exchanging points right through the quarter it wasn’t until the last 90 seconds that Fearless really stamped their authority on the game. Three quick baskets and a trip to the charity stripe sent Fearless into the final ten minutes up by 15 at 69-54.

The final quarter started with yet another exchange of baskets, but the game was already done and the score line soon began to reach blow out proportions. 75-86 with 8 minutes left, 80-56 with 6 minutes to go and then as the game became little more than an exhibition, 93-63 with 3 minutes left.

Fearless Coach, Ronnie Simmons, noted “And One play the same thing over and over and I was ready for them tonight.”

Top scorer for Fearless was Franklyn Penn Junior with 26 points “All I want to say is thank God for bringing us out successful and big up my team mates. I’ve been working hard on my game and just wanted to come out and bring home the Championship.”

Penn Junior added 9 rebounds and 6 steals, whilst Jomoiri Dagou also scored 26 points with 10 rebounds and Romain Minott had 18 points with 10 rebounds.

And One were led by 19 points from D'moi Hodge who also added 11 rebounds, 15 points 9 rebounds from Jachoy Walwyn and 10 points 11 rebounds from Vedal Penn.

The Senior Division Championship brought the season to an end with Legs romping to a 96-84 Game two win to also sweep the series 2-0 and successfully defend their Championship.

The game was all square at 20-20 at the end of the first quarter and tied again, 28-28 half way through the second quarter after Trevor Stephens went 2/2 from the free throw line. The game was also tied at 33-33 with 3 minutes left and again at 36-36 after the two teams exchanged long range “3’s”. Deon Edwin splashed another 3 to give Legs the edge, Jovaughn Cameron did likewise to put the Legs up by six, but All Ah Wee battled back to go on a 5-1 run to end the quarter just 4 down at 48-44.

The third quarter began with Cameron extending the Legs lead, Edwin follow up behind Kennedy H. Bass to make it a nine point game and although All Ah Wee reduced the arrears, Edwin smashed home two more to make it 56-49.

Nathaniel Malone brought it back to a 5 point game and then a 3 point game with 3 minutes left. Bass netted from down town, Edwin made it a 7 point game, Dione Blyden added 3 more and the lead was 10 into the final minute, but All Ah Wee gave themselves a glimmer of hope, firing in a brace of twos to make the gap just six at 70-64.

Those hopes were soon dashed as Bass made it a 10 point game and also added a bonus point from the free throw line to make it 75-64. The same player also splashed in from long range to make it 78-64 and Edwin notched a two to make it 80-64. All Ah Wee huddled in a Time Out and the Legs played just relaxed on their seats as the defending Champions knew the game was in the bag.

The score reached 83-67 with 7 minutes left, Cameron netted a “3” to make it 86-67. He repeated the dose to make it 89-72 with 5 minutes left and as the clock ran down, both Bass and Edwin scored again to finalize the sweep at 96-84.

It was also a repeat for a very happy Simmons as a Double Winning Coach and afterwards he commented, “We are Champions for a good reason, we never give up and even when we were almost down an out in the Kings game we knew we could score quick fire points and dig deep. Tonight against All Ah Wee we just tried to get the ball on the inside and stop them running fast breaks. Once we did that they couldn’t run their plays and we were in control.”

Edwin top scored with 33 points and 7 rebounds, Blyden scored 20, Bass 17 with 12 rebounds and Cameron 13.
For All Ah Wee, Phillip Glasgow scored 14 points with 8 rebounds, Terrique Wattley 14 points, Travis Isaac 13 and Jamal Serrant 13 with 5 rebounds.

Next up for Basketball is the 2nd Annual Hon Julian Fraser/Save the Seed League which commences at the Save the Seed Energy Centre on August 15, 2014. The Hon. Julian Fraser RA (R3) was on hand during both finals and was pleased to be able to offer his congratulations to the winning teams at the conclusion of the night.

Congrats to Legs and Fearless, both coach by the Gola. Thanks to all the Teams that participated in the 2014 short & Sweet League. It unfortunate that teams Pure Playaz, Real Tool and Jr. Lions were unable to finish the regular season because they forfeited out of the league. Looking forward to an exciting 2015 seasons for the fans to return to.

The league was aight but how can we expect to have 3 months of official league ball and then expect our guys to be prepared for the bigger staged tournaments. We need to look into extending the league rather than trying to favor the teams that have all those college players on them by wanting to finish the league before they have to go back to school. Basketball president needs to look at the bigger picture. Fraser's league is a nice league with balanced teams but it caters to the intermediate players (those that play on teams that didn't make it to the playoffs in the BVIABA league or didn't play in that league at all).

the leadership of these associations need to come up with a better marketing plan to get people out and support there sport. The numbers in the gym is downright laughable for valley ball and now for basket ball I believe the leaders are of the mindset that the league will sell itself but that has not been the case for years.
