ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly (HoA) and Territorial At-Large Representative, Honourable Neville A. Smith (AL) said he is now ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work as his feet-wetting period is now over.

Hon Smith’s remarks were made during the Fourth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fourth House of Assembly on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.

“This is my first year, and it was a happy first year, and I think the learning period is over and it is time to work. I come here to work, and I am going to work. The people put me here for a reason, and I am not going to fail them,” the Deputy Speaker stated.

Don’t call me rookie!

The first-term politician said after ten months in office, he is no longer green around the ears.

“I am not a rookie anymore, and so I don’t want no Member on the outside calling me a rookie,” he warned.

“I didn’t know what to expect when it came to this Honourable House. I came here not knowing what to expect, and I have sit, and I have listened and I have learned, and I am still learning. I don’t think I will ever stop learning while I am here. But one of the most important things that I have learned while I am here is we are here for the people, and we are here to make the lives of the people of the Virgin Islands better, and that is something that I take very serious.”

Hon Smith also said he had a ‘calling’ to be in high office and pledged to do everything in his power to make sure that he “lookout for the people of these Virgin Islands.”

“I am going to make sure that I listen to what they have to say because if we don’t listen, we could never fix problems, “he added.

Smith then joined his colleagues to wish everyone an enjoyable holiday season.

Very interesting statement. Many politicians listen to the people and listen, and listen, and listen....

Now is time to step up your game. Another thing, you have to stop being so quiet and reserved. Make time for the people that you were elected to serve down to the street bum.

All I see sheep is, is a well dressed piece of eye candy. The women is always drooling and looking at him. Honestly, many women said they voted for him because he was eye candy and good to look at. Should someone be concerned or worried?

OK. True, you had a10 month learning and you are no longer a rookie. Now get to work. You are an at Large rep and the people needs representation. Come to the HOA ready to be an active participant with substantive contributions to discussion. Your vote counts equally as others so use it. Be a force to be reckon with. Demonstrate that you deserve to be in the house. Do not be a potted planted; do not be a lackey; lead from the front. By the way, your constituency, all 9 districts, needs to hear from you. let your voice be heard loudly on issues. You quietly went along probably to get along on some significant issues. Don’t be all in on the unconventional nonsense. A course correction is needed, for the government is on a one-term path.

When one runs for office, a small learning curve is expected yet one should be equipped and ready to hit the ground running. One should be ready to make strong, critical decisions and take sensible risks.
