Leading by example? Newly paved road @ OneMart!

PORT PURCELL, Tortola, VI – Shoppers this week at OneMart Super Store can arrive and depart in comfort and style in the freshly paved driveway of the main parking lot at Port Purcell.

While the newly paved area will assist other businesses in the immediate area adjacent to OneMart Super Store, it remains unclear if paving driveways for parking lots are a part of the National Democratic Party (NDP) government’s paving initiatives.

As election season draws nigh, road works have begun in various areas across the territory, mostly on main roads. Minister for Communications and Works Hon Mark H. Vanterpool, it seems, had to make sure he leads by example with the freshly asphalt paving in front of his business.

"What we are seeing is leadership by example, “remarked one caller to this news site as he referred to the newly done asphalt roads in the compound of ‘OneMart Supa Market’ and ‘P and M Studios’.

The ‘OneMart Super Store’ is one of the places with reasonably priced goods on the main island of Tortola and sees a large influx of shoppers trekking through on a daily basis.

Business owner Vanterpool offered no comment when contacted by our news room on the asphalt paving.

A senior officer in the Public Works Department confirmed that it is the same asphalt used recently on the James Walter Francis Drive highway paving, but decline to say if members of his staff were the ones doing the works on the road at OneMart parking lot.

Efforts to reach Public Works Department Director Jeffrey M. Skelton for a comment were unsuccessful.

"This is good, you know, some people would have other ideas and may want to say all sort of things but we hope to see other businesses following this pattern and not sit and wait in the hope that Government will do their frontages too, they can be good corporate citizens as their pockets are filled by the very people whose car tires some of those roads damaging," said one man who only gave his name as Mr Lloyd.

‘Have no fear with Gov’t borrowing millions!’

Delivering a campaign style speech at the launch of the BVI Electricity Corporation Phase 5 development programme on March 23, 2015, Minister Vanterpool had extolled the efforts of the Government and urged the audience to clap at the achievements.

“When you are put in fear that this Government is borrowing $100 million in one ministry to improve the infrastructure of this territory I want you to understand that this Government is doing the right thing for the right development for the right future of the territory of the Virgin Islands and that deserves a clap,” he had said.

another election year gimmick, this government needs to get serious and address the peoples real problems

Gimmicks are what the voters love so why stop? I really don't understand why we continue to blame politicians for doing what they see necessary for votes. If we stop voting based on bulls$%^ then something will change. Until then, stop the noise and go with the flow. Gimmicks will always be a part of elections as long as voters continue to fall for nonsense. Look at the longest standing elected officials especially in the Districts. What have they done for the country and/or Districts to deserve 3 or 4 terms in office? That's 12-16 years. Do the math and you will see why they continue to be re-elected. They will not change their behavior once the voters continue to be selfish and short sighted. NDP will pour millions into projects that are good for the country but also good for their election hopes. That's the game, that's how its played, works every time, snap into reality! This is not only in the BVI, it's politics globally.

Did anyone realize that when the NDP was asked for a breakdown of how the sixteen million dollars for election road works will be spent they only could account for fifteen million two hundred thousand dollars? What happen to the rest eight hundred thousand dollars?

That's not a newly paved parking lot. All they did was paved the road that runs through the lot, it's about time.

Please, that is my concern. It is a newly paved parking lot. The newly laid asphalt is there to prove it. My concern is paving a road that run through a parking lot without considering the matter of safety. I have personally witnessed two near collisions since and to be honest others have occurred before this was doneand two involved pedestrians. The way it was done motorists are now encouraged to use that area. I think soem form osf saty measures should be laid out for this area.

People acting like if it's a whole set of asphalt in the parking lot. That couldn't cost Mark more than $5K including paying the workers to lay it so it's not so far fetched to think he paid for it himself. It would be very foolish given the current climate for him to try to get a freebie off Government because he is Minister. He might be called many things but I have never known him to be stupid.

Since most of you take the job of looking for loopholes and wishful faults on Government as it continues to consistently deliver on it's mandate, put the question to the Hon. Vanterpool about the funding of the paving of the parking lot by One Mart on your agenda for the next House sitting. I wonder how many of you all come on here and give commendations when Hon. Vanterpool and the other Ministers of the NDP regularly deliver on the promises in their mandate to the people and this country?

Sad, so sad. We grasp for gossip and not facts.
The fact as I see it--they are both the same--they are all helping themselves and their friends. Is that wrong? They all get pension after one term. Is that right? Nurses and Doctors who do the dirty work, clean and dressed our soars our wounds bring our medication to our beds, save lives, can`t get Govt pension after 10--15--20--25yrs, simply because they were not born here. Is that right?-----these are facts

Since everyone is curios, the parking lot was paid for him out of pocket and it was done so that the customers can push their trollies out to their cars much easier as it was a struggle before because the road was bumpy!!! Pure Customer Service and nothing else, it has nothing to do with cars driving in there, only assisting customers to get to the cars easier!!!!

I don't think that many people have a problem with that driveway being paved. I think the problem is the timing. The carriageway for one is still incomplete and work has been at a standstill for a while now. I dont know about anyone else but i am tired of trying to avoid the cutouts and potholes on the carriageway. Roads in the 4th District have been neglected for years as well as many other areas throughout the Territory. Yes he has a business to run and customers to please but there must be balance and transparency...the timing makes it seem as though priority has shifted far to the left and the state of public roads (though some work has been done) continue to be neglected.
