ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr The Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) says, late legislator, Ms Delores Lettsome-Christopher will be honoured as part of a 2019 pre-culture week of events.

Speaking during the Seventh Sitting of the First Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA) on October 17, 2019, Hon Wheatley said the event scheduled to be held in the Queen Elizabeth II Park, on November 2, 2019, will come as part of a week of events.

“This event will be comprised of a full day of cultural activities, including music, dance, poetry, drama, fashion, and an art display and book fair and more,” Hon Wheatley said in noting that there will be a great cultural renaissance under his Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government.

He continued, "the public is invited... which will help kick off our activities for culture week which will be celebrated for the 25th year."

Culture week is a period in the VI where residents are urged to reflect on their true identity as a Territory.

Legacy of Hon Lettsome-Christopher

Among other things, the late Hon Lettsome-Christopher was a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Small Business (AASB), the annual street fair “Christmas on Main Street”, and the “Buy BVI” Trade Show. She also played an integral role in the establishment of the Crafts Alive Village which sits in the heart of Road Town.

The GCB Baptist Church in a moving tributed ahead of her November 3, 2018, funeral said in addition to being a cultural advocate and national treasure, Hon Lettsome-Christopher left behind many examples that we can glean from and make a positive mark in this community.

“She will always be remembered for her quest to preserve the Virgin Islands’ pride and culture… Christmas on Main Street, Territory Day, and the Sugar Mill Museum are among her signature ventures.”

Lettsome-Christopher was first elected to the House of Assembly in 2003 and served for 11 years.  She died on October 16, 2018, at her Tortola home and was Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly and Representative for the Fifth Electoral District of the Virgin Island.
