Lack of police presence ‘killing nightlife’- Steve E. Parillon

The lack of police presence at nights is killing nightlife in the Virgin Islands, claims a local entertainment promoter. Photo: Internet Source

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI-A local entertainment promoter has issued a call to the powers that be to increase the presence of law enforcement officers at nightly events, in an attempt to make party lovers more comfortable.

Steve E. Parillon took to his Facebook page on August 13, 2016 to make the plea on the heels of the increase in police presence reported in the streets of Road Town from last week, targeting traffic offenders.

He said the island’s nightlife is dying as a result of the limited police presence.

“Need cops out at hotspots like night clubs and events,” Parillon wrote.

“Two police patrolling a whole island of nightlife where a lot of sh*t happening now, it's killing nightlife!!”

One blogger, who agreed with Parillon’s post, commented that he is “so right, they [police] need to patrol all the night life areas and restaurants as well instead of up and down giving tickets.”

Residents noted the rise in numbers of the members of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, a move that the Chief of Police, Mr Michael Matthews said was coming.

"On August 1st, the RVIPF will reinstitute penalties for all road traffic violations with added enforcement officers undertaking road checks and patrolling hot spots, to ensure that those who continue to violate the traffic laws are penalised," he was quoted as saying in June of this year.

On Thursday the 11 August 2016 I personally thought there was some type of emergency in road town; I actually counted 10 uniformed officers but after asking a question I found out the police were simply out in such number handing out traffic tickets : by the time the sunset not one police was on the street in road town....by day the police out and come night when the criminals roaming the streets not one police could be found.....joke business

You chatting foolishness. You think the police don't have better things to do than to come provide security for you at your private business? You need security, go and hire them
Privately. Your functions are private so get your own security. Only when it suits all you best, you all want to call on police.

Wa u think if a nigth u going to club and a man see with ur big 8000 dollar chain and he see u alone walking to ur car cus which u park far becouse the club parking full. He see u alone and may be he have a knife or a gun, but if he see police on patrol he may think twice. But i really think wa is killing the nigth life is the lack of the nigth life

What u need to do Steve is hire proper security and put effective measures in place at your business place.

This is so TRUE! My ten year old brother dropped my chain with handchain attached in church one Sunday and it was picked up as soon as he dropped it. I asked the pastor to announce same in church and ask the cleaners if they saw anything. Neither of which were done. Material items aren't my thing but this was a family Heirloom.

I will quicker wear my valuable jewelry in the streets than the church as a result of.

        So much for Christianity!

You see the problem is they only do these searches at the time when the working class out and about. 8-9 in the am and 4-6 in the pm. These patrols and searches should be random and at all times of the day and night. Steve is right. There is literally no police presence at night. Any night. As a citizen I have been concerned about this for a long time. There are certain main roads that you never see a police patrol car on after 8 in the night. The Royal VI police force need to step them game up.

I wish the young fellow luck getting Tortola police out from any of the stations to actually patrol during the night....our police only comes out to investigate a crime or any accident:: Thursday 11 August 2016 made history on the island of tortola over 5 uniform police were actually seen in the road town area and their mandate was to issue traffic tickets; by time night came, not one officer was in road town....I think young men is simply asking is for the police to patrol the streets of the territory and not necessarily provide security for his Pimp club.....I have a business in the city and I have the same concerns(which part the police?)

@ police: some how you not understanding the role and duty of police in any given society....my good friend, the very presence of the police acts as a deterrent for crime: the function of police is the prevention of crime and the detection of crime.....listen; when I left the BVI High school in the 1980 I was a police and I had to walk that beat in road town; rain fall or sunshine; back then your shift was 07:00-15:00; 15:00-23:00 & 23:00-07:00 and you had to walk the beat: mr police, you have to fully understand that the police are not doing the tax payers of this territory any favours by executing their duties: I challenge any one of you to leave your house now, and count the number of police that you see on the public road(dont be shy, go outside and count the number of police that you actually see patrolling your neighbourhood)....we have a set of clowns in this place defending bull$it but you can blame them because with poor leadership you must get poor results and the brake down of law and order.....leadership is our issue as this place tries to develop(all dem boys want to do is fill their pockets with your tax dollars...talk that)

Wize up don't you think it have more to police now than in the 80's. How many departments you had back then. Seems like you are still is the 80's. This is now 2016, we are focusing on about 40 years after, you think things remain the same. The issues at had now was not the issues 40 years ago. If you was indeed a police, and you feel nothing happening now with the present force, you seems to still have a lot to offer, why not come back as a special constable or take the initiative to form your own neighborhood watch group and lobby for other communities to do the same. Yes the job of the police is to prevent, preserve, protect and detect but can they do it alone, hell no, the community have their part to play. If you was a police, were you everywhere that when crime committed you see and deal with it at once, hell no, so the police cannot be every where, sometimes you analysis is rather pathetic. Time change my boy, get with reality.

If you want to be involved with kiddy ratchet entertainment there is nothing police can do about it. When you enter certain establishments the weed smoke killing you and the underage drinking and drunkenness is unbelievable, are they sure they want police involved? If the police were to really do their jobs it will have the opposite effect so this guy may want to rethink his position. If you have issues at a venue invest in private security.

While I do agree that police presence at night needs to be a bit more visible at hotspot areas. I do not think that is affecting nightclub night life. Firstly, the crowd that Mr. Parillon is soliciting do not particularly like him and his business habits....nor do some artists, djs or establishments. Secondly, they type of persons you solicit for your "nightclub" offerings will harbour those who make law enforcement more challenging....and thirdly do remember our resources in the BVI are limited and continue to dwindle. I suggest that you upgrade your security at your establishments, promote a secure enjoyable venue, and that in itself will assist the police as step towards what you are seeking.

    Just Saying

I believe that security could be one of the issues why some people may not go out at night but it could also be because of the type of entertainment being offered, as well as the crowd!! Bring a decent entertainer/DJ (once a month/quarter etc., whichever your budget can afford). Definitely implement an age limit (21 and over). I'm sure this might encourage the older person's to come out of their house. I definitely as an adult don't want to go nowhere to party at night and it full of children (huge turnoff)!! Hire your own security and on major nights then you can enlist the help of the police to patrol or do whatever. Just my thoughts.
