‘Labour Minister needs to be replaced!’ – Edmund G. Maduro

“Here we have the Minister for Labour telling us that he cannot give a written reason why this good lady’s employer has dismissed her. Isn’t that crookedness? Isn’t that unfair?” asked Edmund G. Maduro. Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio Talk Show host Edmund G. Maduro has sworn to take the fight for a woman, who he believes was unfairly dismissed, to as far as the Governor if he does not get any response from Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering.

He was speaking on his EGM Radio Show aired on ZROD 103.7 FM last evening October 9, 2014.

According to the host, the woman, who was present on the show was fired from the place she worked as she was accused of some form of wrongdoing. But he said she never got that accusation in writing.

“According to the law anybody who accuses you must do so in writing, whether it is in the courts or wherever,” he said.

“Here we have the Minister for Labour telling us that he cannot give a written reason why this good lady’s employer has dismissed her. Isn’t that crookedness? Isn’t that unfair?” he asked.

He said that the Labour Department is ignoring the rights of the woman for reasons “only God knows.”

Speaking on the show, the woman who withheld her name said that she had been dismissed from her place of employment from May 6, 2014 and she has made numerous efforts to try to seek redress but to no avail.

“During the time I was dismissed I have been to the Department of Labour. I spoke with an individual there and I was told at the time that the Minister said to them they were authorized not to put anything in writing,” she said.

Maduro said that he intends to continue fighting on the woman’s behalf and will reach as far as the Governor.

“I promise you this, I will continue to help her and as I said earlier we will be petitioning her Majesty the Queen who is the Chief Executive of this country. We will be sending a copy to every elected representative in the Virgin Islands, we will be sending a copy to every newspaper, every news media and if possible to the BBC and I am going to try to get a copy to the Daily News in St. Thomas,” he said.

“Any Minister of Labour [who cannot address this situation] needs to be removed or replaced with somebody who can do the job and who can protect the rights of the people,” said Maduro.

So we should fire an elected official because a complainer like Edmund heard a story from a woman about wrong doing? Did Edmund order a full investigation into this or just blabbing his mouth as usual?

So the story continues, the lady was dismissed as unsuitable before her probationary period had ended and the job was given to another belonger who was the better worker. However Maduro thinks the employer is wrong for not employing her regardless. They were asked if they were unhappy with the company to go through the correct grievance procedure channels, which she did - Then when Labour and Natural resources find no wrong doing on the side of the company Maduro is still not happy! .

There's more wrongdoings the minister ignored in the labour department. They will unravel before election.
