SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI – One of the misguided notions of many is that when they apply for work permits they will automatically be issued one, announced Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr. Kedrick Pickering at the last leg of Labour meetings that concluded on Anegada on Monday, March 5, 2012.

He told residents at the Emile Dunlop Community Centre that the application for a work permit is a process that must have stringent guidelines.

“If the process is not adhered to and persons don’t meet the requirements for them to be entitled then it will not be issued,” emphasised Hon. Pickering.

Furthermore, the Labour Minister pledged that the Department is working feverishly to wade through the backlog of permits.

According to the minister, when the acting Labour Commissioner Janice Rymer took over the reins in December 2011, there was a backlog from August. However, he added that he was informed recently that the pile has been reduced and the Department is at January 2012.

Doc is increasingly demonstrating the leadership and style of governing that is peaking my interest. He is doing without the noise and showmanship, and skkpping from pillar to post. Looking as if he was a good choice for Deputy. Nonetheless, you are talking the talk and saying the right things and hitting the right notes but. got you to walk the walk. Activity is not outcome. We will grade you based on talking the talk and walking the walk. Outcome, ouvome! We need to see action that protect the interest of Virgin Islanders, yet promote economic growth, protect environmental/cultural/natural resources, and equip locals to share in the economic growth.

Mr. Pickering this is a simple issue get the private sector and even locally own businesses to be sincere and serious about hiring BV islanders and the work permit issue could be a thing of the pass as most of the skills you need are here but their is big time discrimination against locals and that is a fact!
