Labour Dept. to aggressively assist unemployed VIslanders

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – In an effort to minimise the unemployment of Virgin Islanders, the Labour Department will soon have a section in place that will deal solely with that issue, announced Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr. Kedrick Pickering on January 19, 2012 at the East End/Long Look Community Centre where a community meeting to discuss labour matters was held.

Hon. Pickering divulged the plan after a resident suggested that the Labour department should advertise vacancies, and in turn place the most qualified persons for those jobs, instead of placing that responsibility with an employer who may have someone already lined up but is just going through the motions.

Hon. Pickering agreed and noted there is the need for an employment agency, since most of the jobs advertised are through the classified in the newspapers.

The Labour Minster added, “The bigger problem is those persons looking for a job and what we don’t have a structure in place that allow for individuals seeking jobs. We are going to redefine the physical space in the Labour Department where one section of the department actually speaks openly about employment issues. So when you go to the Labour Department you will know that is the section for people who are looking for a job. You will see a sign there.

“We have already begun putting things in place to have specific members of staff deal with that issue, and then we will deal with the legal requirement where it clearly states that locals must be first preference for a job. It is our responsibility to help our people access or find the jobs.”

Meanwhile, another resident asked what was the unemployment rate in the Virgin Islands (VI), however, Deputy Labour Commissioner Stephanie Williams stated that figure will be available in another few weeks.

Oh shut the hell up you dim bulb! It's about time Education and Labour worked hand in hand, which we are seeing now. How can Education work independent to Labour when they're interconnected? You dumb fool!! Now that you can't say anything negative about their plans you have to stir up confusion. Youth Affairs and Sports falls under the Ministry of Education. The unemployed youth is considered a YOUTH AFFAIR! The Labour Department needs revamping, it falls youth affair. Common sense would show you that both Ministers have an interest in this and they have both started on the right foot! It pains me to have to respond to bullshit like what you've written but it's alright! What did the past Government do about unemployment? Nothing except berate employers while still renewing all their permits and issuing hundreds of work permit exemptions, which now have to be reviewed. Go sit in a dark corner and let the people we voted for do their work!!

All job advertisement should be available online. It's not difficult to create a web page. Require all job vacancies to be submitted in Word format (or similar) and upload them onto the web. As for having all job hires go through Labor, that is idiotic. One, Labor cannot even get a work permit renewal completed in 2 months. Two, there is more to hiring than qualifications, a persons attitude and personality must be a fit with a company's culture or the job won't be good for either parties.
