ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio show host Edmund G. Maduro continues to call on the Government to respect the rights of BVIslanders in terms of employing persons from the Territory as he defends the rights of a local woman who was fired from her job.

He was speaking on Thursday evening August 28, 2014 during his EGM radio show on ZROD 103.7 FM and aired at 8:00 pm.

On the show he accused the Labour Department of abusing the woman who approached him for his intervention after being fired from the place she was employed and her position filled by a non-BVIslander.

“I am saying to you the Labour Department is abusing the employee that I just spoke about because it is their responsibility to make sure that there is no discrimination of this sort takes place,” he said.

“The Labour Code clearly states that no one could employ a non BVIslander in preference to a qualified BVIslander, and I use the word qualified, because I don’t want to abuse the privileges of the employer,” stated Maduro.

“The rights and privileges of the employer are very important, and we mustn’t forget that the employer has wide, wide ambiance in terms of deciding who they would employ,” he said.

“We are not dogs and we must ensure that anybody who comes to this Territory to do business must do so in accordance with our laws!” he said.

He said that children of the Virgin Islands must remain the masters and bosses of their own home in the years to come and that “we the older ones must stand up and try our best to stop these miserable behaviours.”

On a previous show Maduro had threatened to expose the Government official who was approached for assistance regarding the woman’s firing if no help was forthcoming.

Maybe your brother thought BVI was his homeland and he refused to go in for time, resulting in overstaying in our country. If you going talk, talk all.

I can bet Edmund didn't do an ounce of research on his own. Being qualified doesn't automatically mean you're a good worker. Attitude among other things play a great role I as well. BVISlanders are treated unfairly at times however people like Edmund only make matters worst. Let's have a real candid discussion and stop acting like locals can do no wrong. For starters who decides what qualified means for each job? Doing a bachelor degree online doesn't make you automatically qualified and I think that's the problem for many locals. It's funny how we never hear Edmund touting the man locals making 6 figures at these same expat companies but quick to harp on negative. You would swear we don't have local bosses here some of whom do hiring and firing.
