BAUGHER’S BAY, Tortola, VI - “It’s two years now and it has been very hard on our family but we are trying to do our best to remember KayKay,” said Ms Donna Peter.

Family members and close loved one of the late Kwanna Todd-Rhymer came together yesterday Sunday, March 16, 2014 and held a memorial service at the CSY Dock in Baugher’s Bay where she was shot and killed by an ex-boyfriend Alcedo Tyson.

Tyson is currently serving a life sentence having been found guilty as charged for the murder.

At the site yesterday afternoon close friends and family including her mother and siblings had a very emotional memorial ceremony which to the greater extent focused on celebrating the life that she lived and the joy that she had brought their lives when alive.

According to the sister Ms Donna Peter earlier in the day the immediate family members spent some time at her grave site. “We know that is her final place but we want also to come back here and remember her,” said the emotional sister.

“She loved life, she lived life to the fullest and that’s why we came here to remember her.”

The KayKay Crew are Kwanna’s closest friends and they had custom made T-Shirts which were worn at the memorial yesterday. The friends said that though they know that Kwanna is no longer with them in person she is present in spirit and they will forever do things in her memory.

They explained that returning to the place where her life was prematurely and wrongfully taken caused tears to flow and if they could have had one wish granted it would have been for her return in the flesh to them.

For the greater part, yesterday’s memorial has brought some great relief to especially her mother whose idea it was to have the service.

Life without parole

Alcedo Tyson, 25, was on July 12, 2013 sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the murder of Kwanna Todd-Rhymer on March 16, 2012. Tyson was found guilty of the crime in the High Court on June 24, 2013.

The crown was represented by Senior Crown Counsel Valston Graham who stressed that the death of Todd-Rhymer was a hard hit on her family, work colleagues and other loved ones and that it was no telling if they would ever come to grips with the loss of her lively presence.

Graham had also said Tyson has no hope of rehabilitation as he has shown no remorse during the social inquiry and “he did not come clean”.

Justice Redhead who presided over the trial and the Crown were both at a loss as to the motive for the murder. The judge had even asked Tyson’s lawyer, Patrick Thompson, if he was aware of Tyson having any girlfriend. "He executed Kwanna. I would say that was an execution," Justice Redhead had stated.
