ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The much anticipated debut of the Bayside Blazers in the 40th Anniversary Basketball Federation National League, ended with a little less than glory, as the team was brushed aside, 103-63, by the Kings on Wednesday May 21, 2014, at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex.

The Blazers began the game slowly and looked every part a team playing its first real competitive game together as the offensive build up play was slow and ponderous. They also put themselves under pressure defensively, resorting to attempted 3 pointers giving the Kings easy possession and Ray Victor in particular a clear run at the basket.

The first quarter closed at 26-16 with Ray and brother, Rowan, running the show with their speed, skill, versatility and exuberance. The Blazers, though, would get as close as 4 points before half time, taking advantage of some poor shooting from the Kings and finally getting to drive under the basket to rack up some points and reach the break at 38-31.

Chaurbin V. Smith was the best of the Blazers, but was getting little creative support from the rotation. Sandy E. Nadal had an off night with his shooting radar and Mikey S. Joseph failed to get his big numbers, but as one spectator noticed, the Blazers are a few ingredients short of a good mix, but got better as the game wore on.

The Victor brothers turned on some more magic in the second half increased the speed of the transition and took full advantage of the turn over ball to race into a 62-47 advantage and then reached the 100 point barrier with a few seconds left on the clock to rub a little salt in the Blazers wounds.

Ray Victor finished with 32 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists, whilst Rowan scored 14 and added 6 rebounds with 8 steals. Juan Richards scored 17 points with 14 rebounds and Kimani Stevens 10 points with 4 rebounds.

The Blazers were led by Nadal’s 17 points and Joseph with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Smith finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, Calvin Smith 11 points, 7 rebounds and Allison Leonard 10 points with 5 rebounds.

In the evening’s earlier game, And One took care of the Junior Lions, 101-76.

Dmoi Hodge led the way with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 7 steals and 4 assists, Jachoy Walwyn added 18 points with 9 rebounds, 5 steals, 6 assists and Akeem Nibbs had 15 points, 10 steals and 7 assists.

For the Lions, Prince Slavius had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Kiover Hatchett 15 points and Justin Solomon 12 with 9 rebounds.
