King & Kelly finish 1, 2 in the Gotham Cup 200m

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The 2015 Track and Field season is well and truly underway with several strong performances abroad and also at the BVIAA’s 1st Development Meet held on Friday January 16, 2015.

Virgin Islands’ athletes had some very strong performances abroad, with Taylor Hill finishing 6th in the 60m at the Leonard Hilton Memorial in Houston, Texas. Hill ran 7.63 in the final, which was won by Trinidad’s Michelle– Lee Ahye in a world leading 7.34 seconds. Laverne Jones- Ferrett came home second in 7.41, Kineke Alexander was third in 7.43, N’gozi Onwumere fourth and Allison Peters fifth.

Hill had reached the semi final with a qualifying time of 7.66 and then ran 7.59 to reach the final.

Jackel King had a non-progressing time of 8.13 seconds.

At the Gotham Cup, held at the Armory in New York, on Friday January 16, 2015 Ashley Kelly ran 7.55 to finish second in the 60m Dash, whilst Karene King came home third in a time of 7.59. Kelly would then go on to win the 200m in a time of 24.14 and King would finish second in 24.42

At the same Meet, Tarika Moses ran the 500m to come home 8th in 1:15.12

The BVIAA First Development Meet may have been diluted by the non-participation of Top Notch Track Club’s athletes, but Sprint Tech Track Club took full advantage, recording a whole slew of PB’s and powerful starts to launch their season.

The highlights of the Meet, with times all hand recorded, were in the U18 Girls 150m event, where L’Tsha Fahie led home Beyonce Defreitas and Zacharia Frett finished third. Shaniya Caul grabbed fourth.

The U18 Girls 300m saw the same three lead home the pack, but this time Defreitas finished first with Fahie and Frett just behind.

Kyron McMaster, of Fast Lane Track Club, running in the 600m to build his strength and staying power for his 400m Hurdle season, romped home in a time of 1:25.70 to lead home Khiry Creque and Joshua Hill.

Sh’Kida Lavacia took first place in the Female 600m, leading home Judine Lacey and Arianna Hayde in a time of 1:46.30.

In the younger age group runs, Asia McMaster continued where 2014 left off, with a winning time of 9.58 in the U9’s 60m. Kenniqua Grate finished a strong second, on debut, in a time of 11.1.

In the U13 Girls 80m, Raw Skillz Track Club finished with a one, two, when D’Neigh Williams led home Kaelyah Liburd.
