CAPOONS BAY, Tortola, VI - Following the 3-day August Festival break, the Grassroots Kids in Athletics Programme Summer Camp that kicked off in Capoons Bay on August 1, 2013 with dozens of enthusiastic youngsters between the ages of 4 and 14 resumed on Thursday August 8, 2013.

The inaugural camp is being run in conjunction with First District Representative Hon. Andrew A. Fahie, who pledged to cover the cost of registration for the first 50 children from his District. The camp runs until Aug 17, 2013 when there will be a family orientated mini track meet on the field at Capoons Bay.

Daily activities run from 4-6 P.M.

“Definitely it was a fun filled day,” beamed BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA) Vice -resident Mr Steve Augustine, an IAAF Certified Lecturer. Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online after recovering from running the obstacle course in 27.4 seconds, Mr Augustine said, “The kids who were here, if you speak with them, you’ll get the same response. They definitely had a really good time.”

During the opening of the camp, Augustine was joined by BVIAA General Secretary Delva Thomas, Chief Coach Dag Samuels. Coaches Karl “Dub” Scatliffe and Rhennie Phipps were also in attendance, along with National Youth 800m record holder and IAAF World Youth Championships Medley Relay silver medalist Lakeisha Warner and World Youth participant Kyron McMaster.

Sprinter Kaetia Maduro also contributed to the programme.

“We are going to have different people coming to the camp and we will introduce the children to the different faces involved in athletics,” Augustine explained. “That way they get to know who the people are and they get more involved—that’s what we are all about—introducing the kids to athletics, increasing their comfort level with athletics and building the sport from the ground up.”

On opening day, Augustine said participants were introduced to the concepts of Javelin Throw, Discus Throw, ball toss and using a sprint ladder and an obstacle course with miniature hurdles.
