Kevin C. Smith back in gov’t with $100G a year consultancy!
The new consultancy commences January 2016.
Mr Smith, a Virgin Islander, contested the 2011 and 2015 general elections with the NDP against Hon Julian Fraser RA, who is now the Leader of the Opposition for the Third District seat.
Mr Smith, according to our newsroom’s well placed sources inside the NDP, signed a two year consultancy contract in January 2016 and he is assigned to the Ministry of Finance.
$100G consultancy contract 2016
The value of the two year contract is approximately $100,000 a year plus benefits. It is unclear the scope of Mr Smith’s assignment with the Ministry of Finance as both the Minister of Finance and Territorial At Large Representative Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith and Financial Secretary Neil M. Smith could not be reached for comments.
Following the 2011 elections, after his first defeat by Hon Julian Fraser (R3), the same administration hired Mr Smith as a consultant to be a Business Development Liaison in the Premier's Office on a two year contract. Once the contract expired he eventually became the Acting Director of Trade and Consumer Affairs, the post he left around 2014.
After leaving the Government post of Acting Director of Trade and Consumer Affairs, Mr Smith took up an appointment with Digicel (BVI), as the Commercial and Operations Director responsible for the development and implementation of Digicel BVI's commercial strategy.
He left the Digicel post in 2015 to contest the Third District seat for the second time with the NDP.
With the 2015 elections of last year over and his second lost to Hon Julian Fraser, Mr Smith is back again with another two year contract working for the Ministry of Finance.
The indigenous Virgin Islander is no stranger to that Ministry, having also served as the Post Master General before the 2011 elections under the same Ministry where he was praised for helping to modernise the postal services.
Prior to coming to Government, Mr Smith worked in the private sector and also served as a religious leader.
Is OJ coming back?
It remains unclear if Mr Smith will contest the Third District seat for a third time against the longtime incumbent Hon Julian Fraser RA, who has held on to the seat with the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) since 1999.
In the 2011 elections, Hon Fraser won the seat against Mr Smith in a two man race, with the VIP candidate receiving 613 votes to Mr Smith’s 557. In 2015, in a snap election, Hon Fraser again defeated him with 596 votes to Mr Smith’s 561.
