SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- A little bit of history was made at Ellis Thomas Downs on Sunday October 4, 2015 when Kelsey Camarillo won the first race of the day on Motion for Appeal.

It was the female jockey’s first win, the horse’s first win, and as far as anyone at the track could remember, the second win for a female jockey at Ellis Thomas Downs.

The late animal rights activist Theresia 'Tessa' Gunter had the distinction of being the first female jockey in the Virgin Islands and the first to claim victory at Ellis Thomas Downs. She rode and won many races with some of the best horses at the time like 'Sagge' and 'Mando' belonging to horse race owner Jim Smith of West End, Tortola.

“I can’t believe I won!” exclaimed the jockey who has been riding competitively for just over a year,

The winning time was 1:20 and 4/5th over the 6 furlong race for Class ‘E’ horses in which Orithyia was second and Miss Homer third.

Motion for Appeal is owned by Case Closed Stables. The winning purse was $3,500.

Sin Mirar Atras denies Mark it a Wynn

Race two was won by Sin Mirar Atras in a time of 1:35. Second in the 7 furlong race for Class ‘E’ and ‘D’ horses, was Mark it a Wynn and third Southern Dunn.

Mark it a Wynn and Atras were neck and neck until the back straight when Atras pulled ahead to win comfortably by 3 lengths to take the $3,700 purse.

Victory for Buy Buy Buy

Race 3, contested over a mile, was won by Buy Buy Buy owned by Jarrel ‘Jay Jay’ Rhymer in a time of 1:51 and 1/5th, ahead of Yes by Eric and Luxury Appeal.

Buy Buy Buy was out of the gate first and led all the way around, although Eric pushed hard until the final bend, when Buy said “Buy Buy”.

The winning purse was $4,000.

My Pal Shawn wins again

Race four, over 6 ½ furlongs, saw another win for My Pal Shawn in a time of 1:23.2, ahead of Wrol Up and Star Ship Titan.

My Pal Shawn has now won its last three races and is the “best horse going,” according to jockey for the day, Octavious Vergara.

The champion horse took it easy early on and then took control down the back straight and sped to a victory by 4 and ½ lengths.

Bitter Sweet Dream overcomes Trading Secrets

Race 5, over 1 and 1/16th mile, was won by Bitter Sweet Dream in a time of 1:53.4, with Trading Secrets second.
