ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Miss World British Virgin Islands Committee is pleased to introduce Kadia Turnbull as the designated new holder of the Miss World BVI 2016 title.

Kadia, a 5’7 Virgin Islands model, is 25-years-old; and currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. She was born and grew up in Tortola; and her career ambition is to be a Marketing Executive with the BVI Tourist Board. This, she said is the motivator of her current studies.

From the stage of Summer Sizzle, to New York Fashion Week, and many other modeling opportunities in between, Kadia was  already doing her part to promote the Territory at home and abroad. She explained that her desire to become Miss World BVI stemmed from her observation of past titleholders, and her research of the prestigious organisation.

“The past Miss World BVI queens stayed true and active with their platforms during and after their reigns. I found that Miss World is true to Beauty with a Purpose, and giving back to communities. As such I find honour in being a part of this legacy.”

A key feature of the Miss World Pageant is the ‘Beauty With a Purpose’ initiative, and this is the area that Kadia said she is most excited about. She shared that she has been toying with plans to raise awareness of depression, and other similar illnesses for a while, and recently commenced actual promotional work.

As the new Miss World BVI Kadia said her title would provide a platform for her advocacy of these illness; while setting the foundation for her to achieve a dream she has had for a long time: “To build an organisation for Depression awareness and self-esteem building in my Community where educated volunteers can provide help and relief to persons in my community suffering from this mental illness.”

Kadia said that mental illnesses such as depression are at times misunderstood, and stated that she is grateful for the opportunity to cast a light and help to clear up some of the common misconceptions.

She said if she was not the new Miss World, she would have strived to become the first VI super model. “As the BVI’s first super model I would use each strut to fight depression, with hopes to also become a lifelong advocate in providing help and treatment for this illness.”

Damian C. Grange, Chairman of the Miss World BVI Committee, explained that the Committee intended to host a pageant this year, and initially had three contestants. However, he said that one of the contestants was unable to compete because of personal reasons.

“With two contestants remaining we did not see hosting a pageant and incurring the cost associated as a viable option; especially considering that we are a somewhat new organisation. Therefore, the decision was made to interview the two contestants, and select a winner as was done in previous years,” he explained.

The 2016 Miss World International contestants will compete in various challenges such as Top Model, Talent, Multimedia, Sports, Beauty With a Purpose and a new challenge event called Resort Wear. “Given her background as a Model, her advocacy efforts , her marketing and arts understanding we expect Kadia to shine and make the Territory proud,” Grange added.

Kadia will be officially crowned at a special coronation dinner and inaugural BWA Philanthropic Awards Ceremony on November 25, 2016.

She will be departing the Territory on November 26, 2016 to join more than 100 other delegates from other countries and territories at Miss World 2016; which will be the 66th edition of the pageant, and held on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 in Washington, D.C.

In addition to the [British] Virgin Islands, approximately 15 other countries will be sending delegates to the international Miss World Pageant that were not crowned during a traditional pageant.  These countries are: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Germany, Mongolia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Nigeria, Panama, Romania, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, US Virgin Islands, and Venezuela.

Miss World is one of the oldest prestigious pageants. It was established in 1951. Officially launched in 1972, ‘Beauty with A Purpose’ has had a significant impact in improving the lives of the disadvantaged in over 100 countries, with funds raised exceeding 1 billion US dollars.

We must stop giving people things and let them work for it. I am proud Virgin Islander and I will fight till I am in the position to fix this nonsense throughout the entire Virgin Islands.

How is it given to her when she entered a competition? Is it her fault the other contested dropped out? The final two standing did interviews and she topped she took steps in achieving her position so go wallow in your salty comment

These shows need to advertise that they are looking people to compete. There are other people who would have like to run but didn't know they were already recruiting girls. The committee already had who they want in their mind. Any how I wish her all the best.

If so was the case, why the two finial persons name was not publish in this press release. Or even dates or location. Also why more detail was giving on how how the girls were pick.

If you ran for a show that received little to no support from a community that loves to laugh and ridicule those less fortunate, would you want them to release your name? Not releasing the other young ladies name is a smart choice, if you wanted to know who was vying for the title you should have followed to former queens page and kept yourself more updated, who knows maybe with more support they may have actually had a show. Why does it matter who the others were anyway what are you going to do laugh or say too bad, no one wants to hear that. Just be glad that we are going to be so well represented on an international stage, ALSO check out Ms. Turnbull's anti depression page on Facebook.

Yes blogger you fight for pageantry formation... lets forget about more pressing issues such as the politics in the BVI... let the girl live she means more than just the beauty

There is nothing wrong with pageantry, it can be a positive platform for women to solidify their confidence. However, I wished BVI women would aspire to be more than just a pretty face. That pretty face isn't awarding you any true success. So you never miss a fete, or you get nice things. An education can afford you much more, and will allow you to be a valuable member of this community. These girls only know they want an education while the crown is on. See how many of them actually went ahead and completed the degree they claimed they sought after. BVI Women Do More, Be More!

We need to stop hating on each other so much. I am disgusted with the way we speak of others who are trying their best. Living around white folks (who you don't expect to like you, even though they surprise you sometimes) is better than living around this crab in a bucket mentality. You are a beautiful young lady. Continue to represent us in this positive manner.
