ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Unites States born Virgin Islands Belonger, Mrs Shauvon Hodge-Frank says locals are not as proud of their heritage when compared to others like Latinos who champion their culture at every opportunity.

"In all honesty, I think, we have just a handful of BVIslander or Belongers who actually express that they are happy for where they are from," she said.

Mrs Hodge-Frank was at the time speaking on the February 26, 2020 episode of ‘Real Talk’ with host Karia J. Christopher, along with guest Maria V. Glasco-Smith, where she noted that although she gave birth to her own children in the US, while not living there, she remains baffled as to why Virgin Islanders don't embrace their culture.

"Sometimes you would hear people [say] oh, I can't wait to go back where I come from...I would be like why you just don't go back! Like literally, you need to just go back!" she said.

Territory Day

According to Hodge-Frank, while the VI is a stepping stone and provides new opportunities for many, celebrating one's culture should also come with celebrating the culture of the Virgin Islands.

"We should make Territory Day a big deal, that's how I see it. My children, they have to go to school dressed in their Territory clothes when that day comes, it's no if's, ends or buts."

She continued, "On the other side, we have people who come from where they come from but they don't want their children dressed in our clothes when it is Territory Day. They find it as offensive, they want to put their children in their culture clothes, which is disrespectful."

Hodge-Frank added that as a Belonger she remains very proud of the VI and underscored that being born on US soil provided additional opportunities.

Understanding the issue

According to Mrs Christoper, locals not being proud BVIlanders could be due to a lack of cultural appreciation. She said expats latch on to their culture as in the case of Latinos.

"It says that there is a problem, when we have children who are five and six who come to school in the Latino wear, the Cuban wear, the Haitian Wear... on our Territory Day. I think it sends a bigger picture of what is wrong with our country in terms of BVI pride."

Hodge-Frank agreed. "You think that is bad? What's even worst is that we know that one of the parents is BVI born... and they still sending their children in, say for instance, where their father from culture wear."

Latino heritage Belonger, Mrs Glasco-Smith said Territory Day should be respected as a day for the VI, while noting that Latinos remain proud people who always embrace and celebrate their cultures.

Territory Day will be observed on Wednesday, July 1, 2020.

Will make this simple for the small minded people.black people is from Africa. The colonial masters is who responsible for the segregation of black people who think they are from the Caribbean or else where.aslong you are black rep Africa, its the only continent we should be representing when it comes to where you are from if you are black.

then as she said go back, more than 3 generations and you come from here not Africa, same as idiot Americans who claim to be Irish or Scottish as their great great grandmother cam from there, no your American just American, not Irish American not African American just American, if people from the USA could get their heads around that simple fact and stop self segregation then the world would be a bette place.

We are proud of our uncouth, loud, dirty, pushy, shouty culture - the BVI is quickly adopting it!

Dressing up your kids in cloth from Clovers doesn't make them any more BVI than anyone else and that does not constitute Culture. Therein lies the problem, too many of us think of culture as a tick-box mechanism as opposed to a lifestyle. How many of us take time to teach our kids about Noel Lloyd and others to ensure that they embrace and understand the true culture of the BVI? We are quick to diss the other cultures but we hardly embrace our own, how selfish.

I need these island people to leave them cultural back home, the ghetto music, loitering and oo don’t talk about the bleaching of faces they brought in the VI. We need to work together as one VI (BVI &USVI) to cut down on the amount of people coming in our islands.

This is pretty pathetic. What, tell all the West Indians in London to give up Notting Hill Carnival? Stop the production of new kinds of music born out of different origins? BVIslanders should look inward and try to understand why people living here want to retain their own cultures whilst also enjoying local cultures. And why the negative reaction to outsiders makes them hold on to their own cultures.
  • Diaspora (10/03/2020, 12:32) Like (14) Dislike (0) Reply
Culture is dynamic, not a static process. In an open country with immigration, culture will change. It is not unusual for immigrants to bring and emigrants to carry the culture of their home country(s) at least for a few generations. As the number of immigrants or emigrants increases, some of their culture, ie, food, clothes, music, literature.........etc will ooze into the local culture. Some tinge of other cultures is starting into the VI culture. With a population ratio of 70% expats to 30% local, it is no surprise that this is happening. The enriching of VI culture with tinges of other cultures should not mean that Virgin Islanders should not embrace and celebrate VI culture. If Virgin Islanders do not celebrate VI culture who will? Virgin Islanders must be proud of and promote VI culture. It must celebrate the food, music, dance, clothing and other aspects of VI culture.

Why would I dress my kids in the wear when they aren't even acknowledge as one of you even being a born here. You say give them my rights, I did that and I taught them the culture. They are respectful and don't look down on anyone; but when its time to leave they will be leaving with the passport that they were made to get; passport of my country. They understand and they have accepted. We are only passerbys and that's that. They don't disrespect but neither will I go out of the way to make them embrace. Fine I understand that they cannot wear cultural clothes from another country but neither will I make them wear the ones from here. Let your people be the one to wear and represent..

I don't have an issue with people from the other islands until they try to change the BVI culture to make their own especially in food. Peasoup without sugar is NOT BVI, ackee in Saltfish NOT BVI, coconut milk in rice and dumplings, NOT BVI..and the list can go on - and they sell it in the restaurant as such just to appeal to the expats. I guess because we are outnumbered - expats to locals, but the younger generation growing up believing this is BVI food, when it is isn't.

Then get your people to cook what you like. I don't like peas soup with milk and sugar so why should I eat it or even have it at my place of business if I own a cook shop. There are many BVI people with restaurants let them sell it there.

Why not leave people to do what they want provided that there is no infringement of BVI rights. Does it really matter if groups embrace their cultures whilst partaking in BVI as well? Is anyone saying if a BVI Islander migrates, that they should not practice their culture? Dividing a country where everyone depends on one another socially, economically among other things does not benefit BVI and only serves to promote hate.
