ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - A woman who is originally from the Dominican Republic was before the Magistrate's Court on May 17, 2016 facing charges of common assault, assaulting a Police Officer and use of threatening language.

Jessica George, 31, a belonger in the territory of the Virgin Islands for the past six years told the court in her limited English that she was unemployed at the time.

George is said to have committed the offences in August 2015.

However, in her appearance on Tuesday May 17, 2016 no charges were read to her, owing to the absence of a Spanish interpreter in court at the time.

In addition, no further details regarding the offences were released in the Magistrate’s Court.

The case was adjourned until June 24, 2016 by Senior Magistrate Tamia N. Richards.

It is expected that the court would have available an interpreter on that date to facilitate the continuation of the matter as, while it was clear that the woman had some knowledge of English, it was felt to be insufficient to allow for the necessary courtroom interaction to take place.
