Jazz in the Garden brightens Saturday afternoon
It was the 6th Annual Tea Party of the St. Georges Secondary School titled ‘Jazz in the Garden’ and from all observation it was nothing but a huge success. The event was one organized by the School’s Parent Teachers’ Association and equally attended by students and other supporters.
The afternoon featured an array of classy items of Jazz by Kamu George’s and G Smooth featuring Calden James, steel pan music by the SCSS Steel Orchestra and the Miracle Touch Steel Orchestra, door prized giveaways, teacup and saucer/teapot competition and the highlight was the fashion modeling display.
The extent of class was even seen as the students from forms 2 – 5 took the runway as if they were professional models attracting loud rounds of applause and in some instances standing ovations. The ‘all female’ group of ‘in school’ models displaying a variety of clothing lines donated just for the afternoon by Chic Trends – the mobile boutique for women, Sabelle and Just Be You (JBU) fashion entities.
Ms Janet Oliver won the tea cup set prize of the day while Ms Margaret Borde took home two prizes; Tea Pot and Tea Cup and Saucer.
The jazz session by Kamal Georges and crew is a sneak peak of what is to come at this year’s annual Jazz on the Hill in Virgin Gorda. Standing on the outside without seeing what was happening on the inside of the school’s garden one would have thought that someone was playing a HD classy album of some world renounced saxophonist backed by an all star singer.
The performance by the SGSS Steel Orchestra also attracted recognition as someone in the audience shouted “Yall ready for the road now kids, go for it.” That was well agreed by others who yelled “Yes, Yes” while others applauded.
The door prize was won by a young girl who stood by the drawing area holding on to her ticket desperately hoping for her number to be called. Her dream came through after some six tickets were pulled but the persons bearing those numbers were not present. Then the MC switched and much to her surprise the stars shun on her as her number was pulled. “Yes, I won, I won, Yes I won” she said with her hands up and jumping. Her prize was a gift voucher for a dinner for two.
A traditional piece was also well placed in the programme as the 2G dancers dressed in their territorial outfits capped out the day. Appropriate foods were in abundance and who hadn’t their fill just didn’t want to eat.
