Jamaican artiste Tanya Stephens expected in VI for World AIDS Day
This was revealed by National AIDS Programme Coordinator Mrs Noelene Levons-Clarke during the television talk show CNB Today, which was broadcast live on Monday October 22, 2012 on CBN Channel 51.
Ms. Levons-Clarke was a guest on the show hosted by Mrs Violet Gaul and which also included Leo Club member Samano Barker-Thomas.
Ms Stephens, born Vivienne Tanya Stephenson, will not likely perform any songs but will be delivering a speech as she has done at many HIV/AIDS forums since signing on to the Live Up campaign against the disease.
Stephens, who was born on July 2, 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica, is an influential reggae artist who emerged in the late 1990s. Stephens is most known for her hits "Yuh Nuh Ready Fi Dis Yet". The single was later featured on the Reggae Gold 1997 compilation album and "It's a Pity", which achieved Tanya international recognition. She and life partner Andrew Henton have together co-founded Tarantula Records.
Mrs Levons-Clarke also announced that the programme for World AIDS Day will be a packed one and will include a tour of the schools by a couple of young persons who will share their experience of teenage pregnancy; a candlelight vigil; and an Adult Conference, which will feature persons such as Dr. Cindy George, Reverend Dr. Melvin Turnbull and someone who is living with HIV.
The activities for World AIDS Day are being organised by the National AIDS Programme in conjunction with the BVI AIDS Foundation and other partners.
The National AIDS Programme in the Ministry of Health and Social Development functions as the HIV/AIDS focal point for the Virgin Islands and collaborates with local, regional and international agencies to mitigate the socio-economic impacts of HIV/AIDS.
