ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - A 20 year-old man has been officially charged by Police after he allegedly stole a woman’s purse from her vehicle, which was parked in UP’s Cineplex parking lot on Monday, May 21, 2012.

According to a Police press release, Jakeil Harrigan of Harrigan Estate is facing one count of theft. He will make an appearance in the Magistrate’s Court sometime this week.

“…he was caught Monday night reportedly trying to conceal a lady’s handbag under her vehicle while standing next to her vehicle in the parking lot of UPs Cineplex. At the time of the incident, the owner, whose vehicle was not secured, was in the Cineplex and unaware of the theft. Nothing was reported missing from the purse,” the press release stated.

Meanwhile, acting Deputy of Commissioner Alwyn James gave high commendations to officers for their observations and quick engagement of Harrigan.

Police have increased motor and foot patrols in and around UP’s Cineplex since a recent increase in thefts around the building and have revisited the proprietor of the Cineplex to encourage him to put the necessary lighting and cameras to discourage would-be thieves.

In the past week, Police received five reports of vehicle break-ins, four of which took place in UPs Cineplex parking lot.

The week prior, there were also five reports of vehicle break-ins, two were of vehicles parked in the UPs Cineplex parking lot and one parked near the High Court while the victim was at UPs. All those cases resulted in items being stolen including iPods, cellular phones, iPads, cameras, wallets, purses and cash and in several of the cases, the windows of the vehicles were damaged.

In one incident, the victim reported leaving his vehicle unlocked at the entrance to UP’s Cineplex and returned to discover his computer bag with its contents missing which included a Dell computer and a British passport. In another incident, a handbag containing a camera, iphone and $1,000 in cash was stolen.

On patrol in the parking lot on Saturday, May 19, 2012, Police saw two suspicious males dressed in all black in the UPs Cineplex parking lot.

When approached, the males, between the ages of 17 to 22 years, ran behind a garbage bin, jumped the wall and entered the ghut. Police then discovered a vehicle whose window was damaged. The owner was contacted and discovered her Ipad was missing.

Police continue to appeal to persons to exercise personal property protection at all times and do their part in reducing opportunities for thieves that may be lurking around parking lots or homes.

While I agree that the management of UPs should ensure proper lighting and security for its patrons, persons need to be more vigilant and secure their property. Come on now...for a very long time we have been hearing reports of theft and vandalism of vehicles parked in that parking lot. Why on earth are persons still leaving computers and other valuable items in their vehicles? $1000. in cash? Leaving vehicles unlocked? Really? You're begging for trouble! Nonsense.
