ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A swerving and dipping 25 yard free kick from Rushado Robinson put the icing on the cake in Islanders’ 3-0 win over Panthers when the Terry Evans Cup 1st round matches concluded on Sunday October 28, 2012.

The Islanders, still smarting from their heavy defeat to the Sugar Boys in the Wendol Williams cup Final, took early control of the game, knowing the Panthers were a dangerous outfit.

Nano Ottley had a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring but was only able to direct his header wide as he found himself unmarked on the six yard box. Then following some pin ball football in the middle of the park the ball broke to Carlos Septus who chipped a delightful ball over the last line of Panthers defense and into the path of Fitzroy Daley. At full pace, Daley took one touch to steady himself and then calmly slipped the ball up and over the advancing Patrick Ewers in goal.

The opener came in the 11th minute and despite numerous half chances being wasted, notably by Noel Isaacs and  Ottley, the Panthers reached half time still in the game without ever threatening the Islanders’ goal.

The second half continued in much the same vein as the first with the Islanders looking to double their lead and snuffing out any efforts from the Panthers to counter attack.

A third of the way through the second period, Rohan Lennon put a sublime finish to yet another Islanders attack with a wonderful curled effort past Ewers and inside the right hand post and the icing was on the performance supplied by Robinson who struck his free kick past Ewers and into the top left corner.

Earlier on Sunday, nine man Wolues took to the field against Ballstars and were only kept in the one sided game by the woeful finishing of the Ballstars.

Football though is a funny game and it wasn’t until the Wolues missing men turned up that the Ballstars went ahead courtesy of a sublime lob from Jhon Samuel. The striker had been guilty of early misses, but there was no doubting the class of the finish.

Nearly half an hour had passed when Gladstone Richards bought out a fine save from the Wolues ‘Keeper, Graeme Willis, but the ball fell invitingly to Samuel on the edge of the box and he guided the ball into the back of the net.

The lead was doubled in the second half when Alvin St Ville claimed he got a touch onto a long throw from Troy Cesar. The ball appeared to go straight into the net, but the Referee agreed with St Ville and awarded the goal.

St Ville was also involved in the killer third when his long ball caused confusion in the Wolues defense allowing Samuels to round Willis and slot home into the empty net.

On Wednesday, East End held their nerve to see off the spirited Haitian Stars 3-2 on penalties after the game had finished 1-1 after extra time. St. Elmore Garraway opened the scoring in the 21st minute from a corner, but 8 minutes later the Haitians equalized through Gregory Atime.

The second half came and went with only a missed penalty from East End’s Blondene Baptiste keeping the crowd excited.

Into penalties and with both teams scoring their first two attempts it was Atime who cracked to give East End the advantage. Further misses followed from Prudence Rosier and Jensen Lavanture before Donson Humprey settled matters to send the Haitians out.

On Saturday Old Madrid secured their passage into the 2nd round with a hard fought win over the Rebels.

Theodore Brooks had given the Rebels a first half advantage before in the second period goals from Michael Fearon (54th) and Kenmore Simmons (58th) put Old Madrid ahead. Danny Joseph sent the tie into extra time with a 78th minute penalty kick, but there was no further scoring in extra time.

It was even stevens through the first five kicks and then in sudden death Nigel Welsh missed to send Old Madrid through 6-5.

The Sugar Boys continued their fine cup run of 2012 when they beat One Love 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jario Morris early in the second half of a tense affair.

Over on Virgin Gorda, VG United went down 4-0 to the Lucian Stars on the back of goals from Bradley Henry (2nd), Yunne Jack (39th), Titus Shepherd (45th) and Benjamin Camille (64th).
