Is Shaina M. Smith an early flip-flopper?

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Member of the People’s Patriotic Alliance (PPA) Shaina M. Smith recently announced that she will be seeking the public’s support as she runs for the First District this upcoming elections with the National Democratic Party (NDP).

However, the public is left baffled by this move, which they believe makes her a flip flopper as just a few short months ago she gave a totally different position as to her intentions regarding the upcoming elections.

Ms Shaina M. Smith, speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online in January 2015, confirmed that she would not be running in the next elections with the NDP, neither At-Large nor in any district, or has she joined that party. In fact she said, “The PPA is in the process of organising a team to contest as a viable option in the next elections.”

When quizzed about allegations that she has been approached by the NDP to run in the first district, she neither confirmed nor denied that she was approached, but responded, “I am with the PPA. How can I run on two slates?”

Running as NDP

However a press release on Monday April 13, 2015 from a group calling itself The Committee to Elect Shaina M. Smith as the First District representative said “[The Committee] is pleased to announce her candidacy for the First District seat in the upcoming general elections as a member of the National Democratic Party’s team.”

“When asked why the change, the former Public Officer; currently the Principal Consultant at her company Smith & Associates, Inc., replied that upon her examination of the issues facing her district she came to the conclusion that she would best serve her country at the district level,” the release said.

A better VI one district at a time

According to the release, Smith said that she believes the way forward is to build a better Virgin Islands one district at a time as nation-building is a progressive process: bottom up and top down.

“She sees this an opportunity for the first district to move out of its holding pattern and realise its potential through a focus on business development, physical infrastructure improvements and a long term plan for the district over the next 12 years,” the release said.

Similar priorities

“Why the National Democratic Party's Team? When I look consider the vision that I have for the country and at the achievements of the National Democratic Party, I see a team that has similar priorities for the advancement of the Virgin Islands for now and years to come,” the press release quotes her as saying. “The approach of the National Democratic Party to the country's development is aligned with my own development philosophy and I see myself as a good fit with this team,” she said in the release.

Regardless o how much she was contracted for- SHE DELIVERED! We fail as BVIslanders to acknowledge when people do what they were hired to do and focus on only how much they made. We have a new hospital building and Shaina, thank you and may God continue to bless you in everything that you set out to do.

Could the position of Project Manager for the Iris Oneal Clinic which was afforded to her cause her to change her mind ? Win or not, a healthy salary for the next year plus can make a difference.

VIP failed us. NDP failed us. Why not enter this election as an independent candidate?
      More to come.

You got freedom of press and freedom of expression why cant she have the same fundamental rights too. Nothing but all you feel the girl because she caught some off guard. She is going forward and not looking at the negative spinmasters.

Let Shania exercise her freedom of expression and choice by joining the party of choice.

I'm afraid what her vision for the first is if indeed she thinks the way NDP does about development. They want to ruin the first with big glitzy programmes, developing Smugglers, big ferry dock, involvement with the big new investor who purchased much of Sopers Hole. Hold on if NDP gets in the first. Problem is that Andrew and Preston will split the vote and she may very well do it.

and which Pat are you referring to? This is the problem with two Pats. The original and the late-comer.
This above is a straight-forward observation about splitting the vote and being careful what you wish for.

I kept saying and will keep saying, the problem y'all having is not with Shaina, or any other candidate. it's with yourself. She and any other candidate can be wherever they want. We the voters have the control of where we vote. Thing is, y'all too stuck up on voting a party. Can't u see from history party don't work?? Vote individual and stop this party crap. When will we learn? WHEN??

Ok Preston, sorry but that wont work. The only people that don't believe in the party system are those who are out in the cold running by themselves because they couldn't get on a ticket. Nobody in these times will vote for a new independent candidate, it's just a fact. In the history of the BVI, all successful independent candidates went on to joint the majority party and became a part of that party. It will be no different now, if preston, dion Jennings, devon Osborne for example were to run independent and win, they already have an idea of who they will align with. A few people that have a problem with both parties telling them nonsense have them feeling good. NDP will win the next election handily because when the dust is clear, talk is cheap. People want a team that can form a Government and move forward.

can you not see that blind party loyalty is a thing of the past except for die hard supporters? People voting their pockets as usual and will accept the white envelopes when they come around. Do not be too sure that they will vote for who they received money from. NDP in my opinion will not win when the dust settles! Look at St. Kitts/Nevis outcome; people are fed up!

One party moves too slow, the other part running to fast.

Reception(real or unfounded)..Slow party risk us being left behind on the world stage, fast part risk making the people of the country servants to the rich and the outsiders. Some where in the middle is best, enough economic growth allowing the people to live well provide for their family have positive future without the risk of losing what their forefathers have work hard for.
