Is Road Town Wholesale/Rite Way Food Markets for sale?

- What is the Government’s position if locals have an interest in its purchase?
Word reaching our newsroom is that the Virgin Islands’ largest food chain Rite Way Food Markets-Road Town Wholesale Ltd., is for sale. While Officials in senior management of the company are tight lipped about the sale in not confirming or denying the question, however, word is that a large hardware and food company operating in the United States Virgin Islands may have an interest in its purchase. According to CEO of Riteway Food Markets, Mr Simon Potter, there is a discussion going on but a sale could happen or not happen. 'People have been looking at it but nothing has been signed and it is far from a sale at this point. It is not the company being sold just shares. We are trying to ascertain who will sell and who will not. The figure is still not quite known. We still have not ascertained that,' Mr Potter told Virgin Islands News Online. Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our newsroom is that the Virgin Islands’ largest food chain Rite Way Food Markets-Road Town Wholesale Ltd., is for sale. While Officials in senior management of the company are tight lipped about the sale in not confirming or denying the question, however, word is that a large hardware and food company operating in the United States Virgin Islands may have an interest in its purchase.

Locals want to purchase, no protection!

There are reports reaching our newsroom that about two local companies/group have expressed an interest in the purchase, however, its remains unclear if an offer was made to the owners of Rite Way Food Markets.

If a foreign company wishes to buy a local company, Government can block the purchase by not issuing them with a Trade License.

Last month, one Government Official- the controversial Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn- told the public in a meeting with his Ministry’s staff that the government can no longer write laws to completely protect locals.

"In today’s society, our Governments cannot write laws and implement policies to completely protect our local population…… There are many occasions where we wish we could do more to protect opportunities for our people, but the world doesn’t work that way anymore,” Hon Walwyn said to the surprise of the public.

Many disappointed in Minister Walwyn’s statement

Many in the indigenous and intellectual class have scoffed at such comments and labeled them as anti-local and the National Democratic Party’s pattern of promoting the non-protection of the minority local population.

With this new policy it is left to be seen if Government will intervene to slow down or stop the sale of Road Town Wholesale –Rite Way Food Market once locals have the financial and funding resources to carry out the purchase.

In the light of globalisation, Governments around the world have implemented laws to protect its indigenous people. The United Nations has approved hundreds of resolutions and charters to protect local people from economic, racial and social discrimination. Therefore, it is clear that Hon Walwyn is out of touch with modern best practices and up to date realities.

It is also our newsroom’s understanding that local business persons with an interest in the purchase have begun to hold informal discussions with government officials.

According to CEO of Riteway Food Markets Mr Simon Potter, there is a discussion going on but a sale could happen or not happen.

"People have been looking at it but nothing has been signed and it is far from a sale at this point. It is not the company being sold just shares. We are trying to ascertain who will sell and who will not. The figure is still not quite known. We still have not ascertained that,” Mr Potter told Virgin Islands News Online.

Efforts to reach Founder of Riteway Food Markets, Peter Haycraft and Junior Minister for Trade and Investment Promotion Hon Marlon A. Penn for comments were futile. Premier Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith promised to return our call.

I would welcome a sale to a big foreign operation. The prices in STT are way lower than in the BVI, and lowering prices in the BVI would be good for the BVI population. No doubt the usual suspects will cry for protectionism so that they can continue to rip off the BVI population with sky high prices supported by a lack of any competition (i.e. protectionism). I don't buy into the idea that creating laws that allow locally owned businesses to rip off the BVI population is good for the BVI. I want cheaper food - lets get CostULess, Pueblo and PriceSmart into the BVI.

This is what you say now but wait until they hire mainly foreign workers and pay them shit which is what they do, then you will be crying to Government and Labour. Be careful what you ask for because if you think things are bad now..wait!

Those that work for the govt seem to think that it makes them important whereas most others think that they work for the govt because they can't find a job in the private sector.

Do you really think once an outside investor gets here to buy out the store that prices will go down? NO! I think they see it as a money making business of keeping the prices the same or going higher to make a killing. Why would they lower the prices? Not for their benefit. If you start bringing outside companies here, they will knock out the little local stores and our economy would suffer at the hands of foreigners. I say put the word out to all locals who can come together as a merger and buy the store....if it is being sold.

Most large food markets in the United States are franchise stores; if this is the case, and the company sells to the highest bidder, that begins the demise of all local food enterprises. Roadtown Wholesales, because of their monopoly on brand distributorship, along with the Government ineffectiveness to alleviate certain taxes and consumer protection measures, have been the biggest culprits for the high run-away food prices in the Virgin Islands.

The writing is already been signed on the walls. People-Please- pay attention to what’s going on in your surroundings. The partners of Roadtown Wholesales maybe ready to “bail-out” of the company and accept their “big payday” due in part to the changing landscape of the market.

It would be so nice for you to understand what you are reading and comprehend. Let me explain. I always shop Local, the reason I shop for certain things online is BECAUSE I CANNOT find it in the BVI. Example: Under Armour and Betsy Ross clothing. Do you understand now? If you tell me where in Tortola I can find the above mentioned I, will be more than happy to petronize the business.

these franchises are not good for the VI. they promote processed foods which make our youth fatter, with poor nutrition and more sugar. They belong to the mother company so most money goes off island. They are tacky, and cater to the lowest common denominator. Where are the local bakeries with tarts and roti? I miss Marlanes.
Copying the poor sections of the US is not the answer, and these food chains do not help with the health of any peoples. AND I know for a fact that visitors don't want to see the same think they have at home. That is not traveling to a different culture.

And better it will get. People is afraid of change but that is the way the world is moving. One may not like change but, in order to survive, you have to deal with change. Example, I have a family member who still have a TV with rabbit ears antena and you have to switch channels buy turning a button on the front of the TV with your fingers. She refuse to use the new flat screen we bought for her for Christmas. Perfect example of being afraid of change.
