ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Controversy erupted in the House of Assembly today, March 12, 2015 when Representative for the Third District Honourable Julian Fraser RA accused the National Democratic Party Government of providing inaccurate answers to the Opposition’s questions.

He was speaking during the question and answer period, which occurred early in the sitting as was scheduled, unlike the previous sitting.

Speaking today, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith said that some of the answers that were made available to the members of the Opposition were drafts and not the final copies and that they had inaccurate figures.

The Premier explained that a figure quoted for the cost of the landside development of the cruise Pier Development Project should have read $21.5 million and not $29 million as was stated on a written answer sent out.

“Madam Speaker, as I said a while ago, there was a draft which included the figure of $29.4 million…but Madam Speaker if you refer to the verbatim [records] you will see that the figure quoted is $21.5 million,” said Premier Smith.

Noting that he didn’t get the figure from an inside source, Honourable Fraser said that he got the figure from the House of Assembly. “I got this from the House of Assembly Madam Speaker…it says here $29 million. How can I from here on believe any answer that I am getting from this House Madam Speaker,” he said.

However, Premier Smith insisted the information provided to the House was accurate save for the part that was a draft which should not have been in the House. “I am not sure how it got to members,” he said.

But Hon Fraser fired back, saying, “Am I hearing that this whole entire package of answers that I have is now null and void? Are we going to get proper answers?”

However, the Premier continued to insist that the information was valid.

Hon Fraser said the answer that he spoke of was part of a comprehensive package. “How is it possible that particular section alone is a draft? It means that the entire package is a draft,” said Hon Fraser.

The Premier interjected that the verbatim reports are available to clarify the issue, something Hon Fraser dismissed saying that was not the point. But Premier insisted, “That is the point! [The verbatim reports are correct].”

another 16 million from social security. How much does the BVI Govt have borrowed thus far, and at what interest rate, and how prompt and discipline is the re-repayment--If the repayment is prompt and well disciplined. Borrowing from social security is the a good thing, the best way for Govt. to go. its a win- win---the road repairs are needed and they are looking good. Like Walwyn says social security board is a success story-- I will add-- its the only board that is a success story, all the rest--useless and their purpose and achievements need to be reviewed.
