Is enough being done about JVD power woes?
Since the cable was said to have been damaged some months ago residents of the sister island have been complaining bitterly of their woes and despite the placement of the temporary generator life as they knew it as it relates to power supply has changed for the worse.
The ability to effectively transmit power generated via a reliable grid is said to be one of the main challenges being experienced by the BVIEC said Chairman of the Board of Directors Mr. Ron R. Potter who along with Mr Abraham shed some light on the issue.
Potter and Abraham were addressing the media and other stakeholders yesterday September 2, 2014 in the conference room of BVIEC. “It’s not a generating capacity why again we have the problem that we have over at Jost Van Dyke, it’s a transmission capacity,” said Mr. Potter adding that the underwater sea cable has failed.
He said that while they are in the process of repairing that problem they were forced erect a temporary generator in order to provide power to residents there.
“So I want to say to the people of Jost Van Dyke that we are working diligently to repair the damage to our undersea cable which provides power to the Island. In the mean time we will continue providing power via the portable generator that is now on island. I want to thank them for their patience so far and we must remind them that we are working very hard in order to address the situation so that we could have a continuous and reliable supply of power,” said Mr Potter.
Mr Abraham said that they are hoping to receive the cable that is required by the middle of this month, “and once we do, then ultimately we are looking at probably anywhere between the beginning to the middle of October in reconciling that situation, and return to normalcy.”
He said that in the meantime they are still maintaining power supply at Jost Van Dyke which he said has come with a significant increase of cost on the company. “We ourselves want the situation to return to normalcy as quickly as possible based on the increased operational cost that we had to incur to maintain a supply on Jost Van Dyke. So all things being equal let’s say by the end of October we’ll have the situation dealt with.”
