ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A caller on the Speak Out BVI radio talk show hosted by Doug Wheatley wants the authorities to slaughter roaming cattle which wander on to people’s property and cause havoc. The caller suggested that the authorities can sell the meat of the slaughtered cattle.

He made the strong point when he called into last night’s June 30, 2015 show aired on ZBVI 780 AM.

“Dougie I am concerned because the Government said that they are serious about having the country beautified. They want to remove all derelict vehicles and they want persons to beautify their property and if this is done can you imagine how beautiful this country would be?”

The caller further claimed that where he is living there are cows that roam the streets day and night and seem as though they have no owners.

“You will see groups of five, groups of six. Dougie I cannot afford to fence my property because if I could have I would have done so. I cannot get [no peace]. They come in the yard, they eat down, they trample down and don’t care how much I talk nobody ain’t helping,” he said.

The caller said that people might suggest that he goes to the bank and borrow money to fence his property but he does not believe he should be the one to outlay expenses to fix the problem.

“Am I really supposed to do that?” he asked. “Doug it is the responsibility of the owners of these animals to take care of them and keep them in a pen or whatever rather than have them destroy people’s property. How is the Government supposed to expect me to keep my property looking good when they can’t control the cow them?”

The caller asked that whatever Government department is responsible for such issues need to get serious and do something about it by impounding the animals and destroying them and selling the meat.

In response, Wheatley said that he would not kill the animals but certainly impound them. However, the caller said that with impounding they are then released and they end up on the street again.

At LOL, even if you are joking, this is serious all over the island. Cows, goats and sheep are destroying everyone's property. I am a local born and raised here as is my family going back to slavery days. These animal owners cannot afford to keep them fed and have water, so they let them loose on us innocent victims who have beautiful landscaping, who spent thousands of dollars. We are living as decent human beings who do not want fencing around everything. which takes away the natural beauty of our islands.

This government will NOT enforce the laws, which are put into place regarding pet owners. If my dogs have a leash law, so should other animal owners. This government has no backbone when it comes to doing the right thing for us, the tax payers and home owners.

I will set a precedence by being the first land owner to start suing the owners. With my camera showing the owners animals doing damage to my property. If the owners claim they do not have any money to pay me, guess what? I will want to take those same animals, have them slaughtered, sell the meat to get my money to repair what they have destroyed. If all of us do this, watch how quickly the government will make the owners do the right thing, but I will be the first. SICK OF ALL OF THIS FOR YEARS.

They filth up the yard constantly despite being gated maneuvering around the gate. It's seems like every night the owners set them free to roam. I wouldn't like someone God forbid got into an accident not seeing them around a corner, etc.

Roaming animals in Tortola are quite disruptive but no one seems to take it seriously.
Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't these animals suppose to be tagged to show ownership and don't we have an animal control division in Agriculture?
Then again, they're ignoring the tagged sheep that roam the college campus which is right next door, so why would they pay attention to anything further away.
    It's a shame.

They also roam in Virgin Gorda: goats, sheep and sometimes cow, especially now. It seems like their owners don't feed them so they eat up people's gardens. Animal owners I've spoken (when I can find out who they are) to tell me it's not their problem. Sure a fence can be erected, but why should anyone have to on account of other people not being responsible. But, if my dog was out there terrorizing passers by, biting and such that would be a different thing. Ghana once said you can tell a lot about a country by how they treat their animals. By the looks of it, we're are society that does not care about others.

@Long look me come from. You obviously have nothing to be destroyed or you are one of the inconsiderate people who loose your animals on your poor community. So shut your selfish stupid mouth since you cannot possibly know the frustration.

Fence your property because the cows don't know that they are trespassing.

Its not just the damage roaming Cows/Goats do, its the infestation. It takes 10 years for Tick larva to die after they drop on the ground. So anywhere that these infested animals roam, is a hazard to you and your children for the next 10 years. This is a human health issue.

I really feel sorry this happened to you @SO EFT UP but I had to take al laugh also. In all seriousness this is a serious issue that is costing the public a lot of money. Legal advice need to be given on this but a joint lawsuit from all person affected by these animal may possibly get the attention and solution needed.

I live in sea cow's bay area and I have the same problem too. I'm a woman and when I'm driving these big cows and humongous horses keep blocking the way especially in night time, I can't drive to access my own home. This is very serious and scary, what if the horses kick and these bulls attack people? The owners need to take control of their humongous/wild animals...no one asked them to purchase them...so take control.. tie them in a farm or something...it's simple.

I can see an issue with goats and sheep ; but cattle ? There must be an owner out there . The authorities should round them up and give the owners a limited time to claim upon payment of a fee. If there are no claimants auction them off ! There should be a lot of takers. By the way In JVD wild goats are regularly captured .
