ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Commentator Edmund G. Maduro has appealed for gambling to be legalised in the Virgin Islands, noting that the constitution allows for satanic churches to be set up in the Territory.

“There’s one thing I’d like to support here today, we need our own lottery system,” Maduro urged while speaking on the EGM radio show aired on ZROD FM on March 27, 2014.

He reiterated a call for the pari-mutuel system of betting to be put in place and added that lottery tickets continue to be sold in the Territory.

“Our constitution makes it possible for anyone to open a satanic church, so what in the name of God are they talking about,” he stated, “they don’t know the constitution and because they don’t know the constitution, they cannot bring good governance to the people.”

One guest on the show pointed to the disparity in society, which is considered to be predominantly Christian, where gambling is outlawed and illegitimate children are being encouraged.

“I don’t know where the church stands on [illegitimate children] but I think they are trying to allow it because of society and they’re curbing the trend…” he said.

He argued that if a bill could be brought to facilitate equal rights for children who are considered as illegitimate, then a bill should also be put forward for the legalisation of betting.

Maduro said it was total ignorance for disallowing cruise ships to gamble in the Territory’s waters and suggested that much business was being lost by the Territory as a result of this.

Co-host, Rajah A. Smith said there has not been any serious discussion in the Territory about growing the economy from where it currently stands.

We also need casino's on one of our outer islands so no children can enter. We need bingo to be open to any establishment that wants it. We need all the things that tourists like so they can leave all their money here and we the BVI will then know what it feels like to be wealthy. Just sand and sea is all over the place and other islands are prospering better than us because they know how to bring revenue to their countries. Our leaders are full of crap. Not a religious one in the group, just keep stealing government funds forever and selling our water rights and islands.

I agree with some of what you say but don't fool yourself that we in the BVI don't know "what it is like to be wealthy".
We may not be perfect or anywhere near but the BVI is one of the most prosperous nations in the Caribbean and actually in the world.
Why do you think we got so many people from other islands coming here. Because they like sea and sand? No, compared to most we doing ok. Can do much better, but if you think this is hard times, you going get a shock if real hard times come again.
What you saying sounds more like greed to me, dressed up as victim bullcr*p.
Dreams of being showered in gold, that's what you got. But we don't need to be Las Vegas. We need to be BVI.

Betting is allowed at the racetrack.....lottery tickets from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are sold, openly, here.....churches and organizations hold regularly Bingo nights.....Raffles are commonly held by every organization....and Auctions are regularly held by all groups....why not our own Lottery for everyone, openly, to participate in and raise funds for the Education, Social Services, or other in need Government services...????

The issue of gambling is both an economic and religious one.
What are the religious issues with gambling and can we put measures in place to address.
However gaming (as gambling is now termed) should be allowed in limited cases where it provides substantial economic benefit to the VI
      - onboard cruiseship which overnight. If the ships overnight, passengers will come ashore to enjoy the nightlife (food and beverages, retail, entertainment, taxis). Need to provide adequate security.
      - national lottery - the proceeds of which can be designated for a special cause (education, the arts, environment, etc)
      - pari-mutuel betting - proceeds from which can go to develop horseracing, other sports and sports tourism.
My overall theme is that gaming rights shouldn't be given to an individual operator (casinos, individual lotteries, etc) where the majority of benefits go to a limited number of people but where they can be spread as widely as possible.

This time around, Edward Maduro is spot on. Every day, (24/7), whether on Virgin Gorda, Tortola or any other part of the Virgin Islands, gambling takes place, and in wide open space.
The California Lottery was created to contribute to the educational system; and it does that very well. With so much money leaving the territory (Western Union, MoneyGram and other export systems in the money export game, why can't we keep some of that money within our territory? Roads are crumbling, and are much like those found in war-torn countries, hospital in need of 13-million for its outfitting, National Insurance in need of funding, the astronomical cost of the incentives we bestow upon our investors, our ports on VG and West End and elsewhere in need of upgrading and expansion; and yet we allow all this much needed money to leave our shores. I say, Legalize it.!

We are not made more Holy because of our National Day of Prayer in which we beg and plead with God to heal our nation, to direct the ways of politicians. Ironically those prayers appear to go unanswered as our politicians continue to run our affairs from the decks of mega yachts and the smaller sister.
    islands. (~/\~)

Church is worse than a casino, they draw people in, brainwash them with nonsense and these fools then gamble that the big man in the sky exists and he has a place for them rather than spending their time alive with family and doing something that is actually productive.

Why should gambling be illegal, its more of a choice for most people that religion is.

I think people who says that they are Atheist are Devil worshippers. So do you believe that their is a devil, but there is no God?. I applauded what you said about Church being worse than a Casino, but when I notice your web name (atheist), I was a little put off. Well, I just pray that you believe that there is a God, because there is. Let me also clarify why I support that Church is worse than a Casino. I go to Church and some of the members are so unfriendly and stuck up, the Casino environment is more friendly and social.. I am not saying that going to Church is a waste of time, but sometimes even the Preachers are a disappointment. Anyway, people need to be given choices. Who want to go to Church do that, and who want to go to the Casino do that, and if you want to go to both, Do That. But put your trust and faith in the one and true living God.

My heart aches for my country to see that some of our own people (I'm not even focusing on those from other countries who live here) are calling evil good and good evil. It saddens me to see that we have gotten to this point where ANYTHING is accepted. Call me what you want, I dont care because GOD has my back; but going down this rebellious path will only lead this country to chaos. I beseech you my brothers and sisters, repent and turn from your wicked ways; God is taking notes. Have mercy on us Lord!!

Just like they don't want a Kentucky Fried Chicken in the territory like it is Illegal to have a KFC here, but people use messenger service to bring KFC from St. Thomas.. They bring KFC from St. Thomas like they bring cargo. NoooooNo Casino, no lottery in the BVI, but Puerto Rico and St. Thomas lottery is sold publicly here. I see police men buying lottery from the Lottery Sisters. People here win the grand prize all the time and the people collect their money and put it in the bank, and that includes me. The government don't collect a dime in taxes. Just like the people here don't want foreign investors, but locally we are not capable of growing our economy to build and maintain our infrastructure. People wake up. Being a Christian Community don't mean you have to be stupid, deaf and blind to what is happening all over the world. I am not saying that everything is good for us, but let us be sensible and get on with embracing some foreign entities that can stimulate our economy. Tourism and Financial Services cannot be the only two Economic Engines. We need other engines of growth.. We must also look at legalizing betting on Horse Racing. It is not legal but people still bet among themselves. We have to modernize our regulating systems or we will be left behind the eighth ball eating dust.
