'Introduce lottery; VI constitution allows satanic churches!' - Maduro
“There’s one thing I’d like to support here today, we need our own lottery system,” Maduro urged while speaking on the EGM radio show aired on ZROD FM on March 27, 2014.
He reiterated a call for the pari-mutuel system of betting to be put in place and added that lottery tickets continue to be sold in the Territory.
“Our constitution makes it possible for anyone to open a satanic church, so what in the name of God are they talking about,” he stated, “they don’t know the constitution and because they don’t know the constitution, they cannot bring good governance to the people.”
One guest on the show pointed to the disparity in society, which is considered to be predominantly Christian, where gambling is outlawed and illegitimate children are being encouraged.
“I don’t know where the church stands on [illegitimate children] but I think they are trying to allow it because of society and they’re curbing the trend…” he said.
He argued that if a bill could be brought to facilitate equal rights for children who are considered as illegitimate, then a bill should also be put forward for the legalisation of betting.
Maduro said it was total ignorance for disallowing cruise ships to gamble in the Territory’s waters and suggested that much business was being lost by the Territory as a result of this.
Co-host, Rajah A. Smith said there has not been any serious discussion in the Territory about growing the economy from where it currently stands.

We may not be perfect or anywhere near but the BVI is one of the most prosperous nations in the Caribbean and actually in the world.
Why do you think we got so many people from other islands coming here. Because they like sea and sand? No, compared to most we doing ok. Can do much better, but if you think this is hard times, you going get a shock if real hard times come again.
What you saying sounds more like greed to me, dressed up as victim bullcr*p.
Dreams of being showered in gold, that's what you got. But we don't need to be Las Vegas. We need to be BVI.
What are the religious issues with gambling and can we put measures in place to address.
However gaming (as gambling is now termed) should be allowed in limited cases where it provides substantial economic benefit to the VI
- onboard cruiseship which overnight. If the ships overnight, passengers will come ashore to enjoy the nightlife (food and beverages, retail, entertainment, taxis). Need to provide adequate security.
- national lottery - the proceeds of which can be designated for a special cause (education, the arts, environment, etc)
- pari-mutuel betting - proceeds from which can go to develop horseracing, other sports and sports tourism.
My overall theme is that gaming rights shouldn't be given to an individual operator (casinos, individual lotteries, etc) where the majority of benefits go to a limited number of people but where they can be spread as widely as possible.
The California Lottery was created to contribute to the educational system; and it does that very well. With so much money leaving the territory (Western Union, MoneyGram and other export systems in the money export game, why can't we keep some of that money within our territory? Roads are crumbling, and are much like those found in war-torn countries, hospital in need of 13-million for its outfitting, National Insurance in need of funding, the astronomical cost of the incentives we bestow upon our investors, our ports on VG and West End and elsewhere in need of upgrading and expansion; and yet we allow all this much needed money to leave our shores. I say, Legalize it.!
We are not made more Holy because of our National Day of Prayer in which we beg and plead with God to heal our nation, to direct the ways of politicians. Ironically those prayers appear to go unanswered as our politicians continue to run our affairs from the decks of mega yachts and the smaller sister.
islands. (~/\~)
Why should gambling be illegal, its more of a choice for most people that religion is.
