BEEF ISLAND, VI - Air traffic at the Terrence B. Lettome International Airport on Beef Island came to a halt today Sunday October 14, 2018, around 3:30 PM when a DHC-6 Twin Otter landed.

The plane operated by Inter Caribbean Airlines and arriving  from San Juan, Puerto Rico  with some 14 passengers landed with a flat tire.

No one was injured, however, it caused a delay in other departing and arriving flights as the airport had to be closed. The airplane with the flat tire could no longer taxi to the tarmac.

Hours of delay

Airport Fire and Rescue personal were on standby as there was a struggle to get the aircraft off the active runway.

After much attempts and onlookers a pallet jack was used to put under the left side to get the airplane off the runway, as many flights had to circle the airport for hours.

It is our newsroom's understanding that there is no spear tire for that type of airplane on island.  It is unclear how passengers departed the plane.

According to our newsroom sources close to the incident the plane fight JY 511 was under the command of a Captain Laure Cheminade and First officer Levan Scantlebury.

The plane registration is VQ-TGW

The airport has since reopened some hours later.

Coy W. Levons BVI Airports Authority Director of Operations confirmed that “a plane had a flat tire and no one was injured” but declined to comment further and referred our newsroom to the Government Information Service (GIS).

If the plane took off from SJ with a flat why did it not circle and land where there are bigger safety services and importantly a spare tyre!

A plane cannot or will not take off with a flat tire.
