‘Insurance companies raping VI’ - Henry

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Commentator Julio Sam Henry is of the view that the National Health Insurance (NHI) which was recently approved in the House of Assembly could not be any worse than current insurance providers in place in the Virgin Islands (VI).

While hosting the Speak Your Mind Show over the weekend, Henry said he felt as long as the Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Ronnie W. Skelton and others responsible for the programme focused on strengthening its weak areas, then the NHI would be great.

“The key is good care, they have to bring that up,” he stated.

Henry added, “I think the ones who are sitting here, sitting here fat doing well, they’re raping this country they’re taking a lot of stuff out of it, they’re charging ridiculous fees they’re avoiding and denying you care when they need to…”

He contended that the cost of healthcare should also be able to be controlled once the NHI comes into place as expected soon. “Once it’s launched we won’t have some of these doctors’ offices around here charging you [additional fees] just to go see a doctor,” he said while noting that some charge $35 while others can go as high as $75 for consultation.

“I believe the NHI will be good and I will see it,” he added.

Co-host Richard Courtney de Castro contended that insurance is only as good as the insurance company that is supporting the insurance.

The recent passage of the Social Security Amendment Bill (2013) will help to facilitate the introduction of the NHI which has seen several concerns raised by residents, many of whom remain resistant to its introduction for various reasons.

Henry, stop the noise and get exposed!! Every insurance has a strategy and that the way they work! They are not ripping you off they are a business that has to make a profit for your convenience for subsiding the total cost of your medical bill. I don't blog but i am tired of people like you , who just talk for talking sake and confuse the people who don't know no better
    Youth speaking

many insurance companies as a rule deny care and benefits. it is their default setting.
these companies are predatory and downright criminal in the way they treat people.

He is way off beam. Some doctors charge $100 and some $190 for a consultation.

With insurance of your own choice with the company of your own choice.....you are in charge of yourself and your well being. Having to be a part of the NH you have no choice and have to accept what they are able to offer. For those with no insurance that is great...for those who have good policies let that stay as it is for those who have made that choice.......

But if you don have the money to have a plan (single Mom with Kids and a deadbeat husband for example) Then you don't have ANY choice! We all need to step up and include every single person in health care. Leave nobody behind! Everyone getting the same high level of health care, not just the people who can afford it..

Every developing country should do its utmost best to provide its citizens with decent care and and education. Like a previous blogger stated the insurance co. is a business, At the end of the day if you never got sick you will have had no return for the premiums you paid. Ideally the HCS should be run by a not for profit agency . I agree with Julio . High premiums and high deductibles have to go !! One 's health should not be a gamble .

I agreed with you, everybody should be insured, but people should have choices, to have insurance should be compulsory, not which health insurance you use, insurance is not a luxury but a most have, if you can afford ( making some sacrifices) something were you have some freedom of choice, why should you settle for less. the NHI will tell you where, when and how to go and that's not fair.

If we are to accept NHI it must be fair for all. That means the percentage must be the same for all. Not like the social security sheme we have where the poorer earners are in truth paying more . Because of the cap on maximun insurable those who make the real wages here end up only paying in truth much less than half their fair share. Why is the heaviest burdon on the poorest earners? I hope the high earners who have decided all of us have to pay the extra 7.5% for NHI on our wage have not excluded their own wages or those high earners in the way of a cap like the Social Security has .
