Inflation levels in Territory manageable- Premier

Premier Smith says inflation levels in the VI have been manageable and mirror that of the US. Photo: GIS
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- To date, inflation levels in the Territory have been manageable and comparable to other Overseas Territories such as Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.

This is according to Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith, who made the statement during his budget address in the House of Assembly on Tuesday January 17, 2012.

Dr. Smith said average prices for goods and services rose modestly in 2011 between two and three percent (2% and 3%) and this has been the trend for the last few years. Rising fuel costs and to a lesser extent housing associated costs and food prices contributed to average increases in 2011.

“As a non-industrialized country, BVI’s inflation is directly related to its imports primarily from the United States and hence the rate of inflation here mirrors that of the US.

Meanwhile, the Premier said, in recognizing the high cost of goods and services here in the Virgin Islands, his administration has already commissioned an analytical exercise in the Ministry of Finance to look at the issue of levying on businesses duty only on the free on board prices on imported goods as opposed to the total of cost, insurance and freight, a measure which Government expects to put in place very soon.

He noted the purpose is to provide local businesses with an opportunity to be more competitive with their external competitors and that by passing the savings on to the customers permits the retention of a higher percentage of individual earnings so that citizens would have more disposable income to meet the needs of their families, and to have that money circulate many more times within the Territory before it takes flight.

“Greater competition in business will result in a lower cost of living for the average BVI resident. We believe, like the late Chief Minister Hamilton Lavity Stoutt did, that with more discretionary dollars in the pocket of the ordinary man, he will build the BVI.”

The National Democratic Party (NDP) during the campaign trail had expressed concern that local business were being put at a disadvantage by the cheaper prices in neighbouring St. Thomas, USVI and hence persons were leaving the island for better bargains.

I think you need to wheel and come again with the Queen's language because I doubt people understand your statement.

Really? DPU is not fully staffed and the statistical data is not up to date. Premier sounds like he is providing the public guesstimations on the facts. The real deal is that food is high, housing is high, electricity is high, bank interest is high, fuel cost is high........with all these HIGHS you would swear we were smoking weed!! What is this administration going to do to curtail this high cost of living so the average person can at least survive? Believe it or not there are some people within our population REALLY struggling!!! The version of 'really struggling' does not include those of us living way beyond our means!

Are you (Free Soul) and Queen Bee trying to convince us readers that since Nov 7th, the DPU and Finance department have totally crumbled and are non-functional? Are you trying to tell us that Doc is pulling his figures out of the air? You expect us to believe that?

Where in my post do you see mention of data since the date of Nov. 7th??!! The issue of gathering data has been an ongoing problem with this administration and when they were in 2003 and the other administration (VIP). The problem of not having proper data to give a true factual picture and make sound decisions. So don't get this twisted as a NDP / VIP thing cause I support neither.

I also respect the late H. L. Stoutt but it is now becoming crazy that in all good remarks about leadership we are using quotes from and singing praises to only one of our great legislators...H.L. Stoutt. It would be nice to make some mention of the another leader in government financial management and development of this territory; the Dr. Willard Wheatley, past Chief Minister and Minister of Finance ( who steered our country off UK Grant in Aid, started several key development institutions and was a very prudent financial manager when we had very little resources. This is his moment, maybe he is a more suitable a the reference for this financial stressful time, ....he did it move us pass dependence on UK grants. Please let us recall other great leaders and especially those who fit the situation. We have many more than one leader who is a hero. Try and recall late Terrance Lettsome, Recall Late Fonseca, the late Faulkner, Late Anthony and late Romney. Our children and visitors need to know we have more than one iconic leader, and that we will do better because we have done it before. Doc is capable to bring us through because it is in us and it is in his heritage and all BVIslanders will support him in these efforts.....recall the leader for this time....Teacher Willard.
