Immigration/RVIPF raid Tortola nightclubs
This was confirmed by acting Chief Immigration Officer Ian B. Penn when contacted by this news site today December 17, 2014.
“There was a raid that was carried out over the weekend…on Saturday [December 13, 2014] on nightclubs throughout the eastern end of the Territory and in the Road Town area,” he said.
“But I really cannot go into anything specific to say what was done because it is still an ongoing investigation,” he said.
“When I could tell you is yes; a raid was carried out of a number of nightclubs and it was a joint operation by Police and Immigration,” he said.
Efforts to reach Public Relations Officer of the RVIPF Diane Drayton for a comment on the raid and whether persons were taken into custody proved futile.
One nightclub operator with whom this news site spoke confirmed that his establishment was raided but said that he did not want to make anything public yet as efforts are underway to having it resolved. Neither did he want his name revealed until the matter is resolved.
“It was a normal immigration raid…they do it all the time to check whether people are [properly documented] and have their work permit etc…but they shouldn’t just check nightclubs only as [foreigners] are working at all sorts of establishments, restaurants, construction sites and so on,” he said.
