ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After much speculation that Mr Neville A. Smith aka Sheep was not going to contest the upcoming general elections even after his name was submitted by the various District Committees as a potential candidate for screening and nomination, Mr Smith has confirmed with Virgin Islands News Online that he will not be seeking to contest.

On April 2, 2015 President of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Mr Carvin Malone had issued a press release in which Mr Smith was named as a possible Territorial At Large candidate on a preliminary listing of names submitted for examination by the District Committees and by the Screening Committee for nomination for the four (4) Territorial At Large seats.

The popular sports figure Mr Smith, who in January of this year tendered his resignation as President of the BVI Softball Association, had been listed alongside Irene Penn-O’Neal, Elton L. “All out” Sprauve (now 9th District), Charmine Rosan-Bunbury, Keith L. Flax, Dr Vincent G. Scatliffe, Rajah A. Smith and Milton C. McLean.

The press release also said four other At Large names submitted were to be confirmed.

Not running

“I’m not running, I’m not running,” Mr Smith told Virgin Islands News Online on April 21, 2015.

The veteran softball player and businessman said he didn’t wish to say anything further right now but promised this news site an interview at a later date.

Contacted, VIP President Mr Carvin Malone said he didn’t have a response to Mr Smith’s announcement as yet since the party goes along with the report of the District Committees, “so that when they bring back their report to us we would be able to handle the affairs and be able to respond to it accordingly.”

It has been long reported that many voters were calling for Mr Smith, who is from the eastern end of the island of Tortola, to throw his hat in the political ring. Many residents had reportedly encouraged him to run either in the Eighth District against the newcomer Honourable Marlon A. Penn (R8) of the National Democratic Party or to run At Large.

Mr Smith has been tight lipped on his intentions until now.

Meanwhile, following submittal of names by district committees, the Screening Committee will complete their final report after the closing date for official nominations has been determined and thereafter Congress would be convened for ratification or elections of the 9 district seats and of the 4 Territorial At Large seats.

“Until such process is completed, with the exception of districts 1 and 3, all other 11 seats are to be finalised,” the VIP press release had stated.

VIP officials have speculated that a snap-election may be called for early July, 2015 prior to the August festival activities.

Ouch. This has to sting the VIP a bit to stick their necks out in a press release only to have Mr. Smith reject them.

Sheep I think you would make a perfect candidate in the 8th and you will get my vote hands down.. Please reconsider, take heed to the cries of the people in the district step up and make the difference that you are more than capable of making. Sheep in the eight dont hesitate, come represent us cause we are running out of faith!

Yea right; within 3 years that young fellow corrected the sewage in green land and he also have Parham Town looking a bit more tidy: if the truth be told, what the others did not do after many years in office Hon Penn came along and did it!!!! For me it has nothing to politics; simply country

The people of the 8th District would be absolutely crazy to vote out the young man so soon. Marlon has done a great job as a rookie rep and deserves another term or even more, to represent the people. You always say the youth are the future yet we are so quick to run them over. Why would you vote out Marlon? Have you been in that District lately? THat district was left for dead under the last VIP and the photos are plenty to prove it. The man has been on the backs of the Ministers for help in his district and he is getting it. He is a down to earth dude and always on the street. No matter who they bring the people in the 8th will return the right PENN.

I am a die-hard VIP but I am troubled about the potential candidates that are being mentioned. They should be selected because we seriously believe they could be elected by the people and have the ability to represent the VI at any level and not just to fill a slot.

I'm not against Sheep as I think he is a stand up guy, my question is, remove Hon. Penn and replace him with Mr Smith to do what? The exact same thing that Penn has been doing for the last 3 years that was neglected for decades? We Want change, we got change and for the better and we still find fault. People are so routed in Parties that they cant see progress right infront of their faces. SMH Stop with the individual self gain and look at the overall progress of whats taking place. We always want want want and now we as a community are finally getting things we still have an issue. I guess we should revert back to the days of getting hand outs and nothing for the future of our country.
