'I'm going to dump the mask when I'm getting ready to talk'- Hon Malone
During the pre-broadcast when social media pages would usually go live to gather viewers, the Minister is heard in discussion with a member of the GIS technical team, however, was unaware that the audio was being transmitted.
Technical glitch
"Ya ready?" a male voice said in the background.
"I am ready whenever you are ready," Hon Malone responded in a reassuring tone.
The audio then pauses for a moment, as the online audience anticipated the start of the official broadcast.
However, in more leaked background audio, Hon Malone is heard talking about his plans to ditch his mask.
"I'm going to dump the mask when I'm getting ready to talk," he said.
"I know people don't like...' before the audio abruptly cuts.
Moments later, the official broadcast starts with the Minster in mask but then proceeds to remove it ahead of his presentation.
Good example?
While the GIS audio is one that was leaked, it should be noted that the scenario came at a time when Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has been strictly advocating the general public to wear a mask while in a public setting, warning that laws may soon come to make it mandatory.
The public has also been holding those in high authority, such as police officers, to wear their masks while in service in keeping with the premier's 'no mask, no service' mantra.
However, while Hon Fahie has always kept his mask on during COVID-19 broadcasts, this is not the first time the Health Minister, Hon Malone, has removed his. Earlier in the week at a Tuesday, May 12, 2020, press conference with the media, Hon Malone asked for an excuse to do the same.
“Good afternoon everyone... If you don’t mind, I will shift my mask. I see the Permanent Secretary looking at me with eyes, but I'm going to put her on the spot,” Hon Malone said, noting that his team has gained vast experience through the pandemic.
At the same press conference, Premier Fahie had prevented a reporter from removing his mask to ask a question, urging him to put on the mask and leave it on.

A new study shows how respiratory droplets produced during normal conversation may be just as important in transmitting disease, especially indoors.
