BEEF ISLAND, VI - LIAT Airlines said it will continue to strive to ensure that illegal drugs do not get on its flights, however, this is dependent on the personal conviction and integrity of its own staff along with the effectiveness of airport security.

Sales and Marketing Director of LIAT Egbert M. Riley said the responsibility for prevention of drugs going on their aircraft lies with the security personnel at airports.

He was speaking last week Wednesday June 1, 2016 during a press conference upon the arrival of the inaugural direct flight of LIAT 300 from the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados to the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island.

“That’s beyond us. That’s an issue best left in the hands of airport security,” said Mr. Riley at a press conference on June 1, 2016 at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport.

Riley offered this comment in response to a question regarding the airline’s efforts to deal with the scourge of drug trafficking around the region.

“LIAT can do its best in hiring the best employees, but at the end of the day, individuals make their own decisions and airport security is the one for enforcing security,” said a very cautious Riley.

In April this year a LIAT flight attendant was allegedly caught trying to smuggle cocaine into Barbados.

She was arrested shortly after arriving at the Grantley Adams International Airport on a flight from St Lucia.
The Antigua-based airline confirmed in a brief statement that one of its employees is in police custody “assisting law enforcement officers with their investigations into a drug-related matter.”

At that time LIAT in the statement said, “The management of LIAT wishes to indicate its full support for, and cooperation with law enforcement authorities in relation to any investigations where its cooperation is required.”

people will always be people. He is right you can hire the best employees and at any instant they do what they want. Some may see or know others have done it and want to do the same. Some may even say my employer not paying me well, payment is late,no bonuses, etc let me take advantage of the situation at hand. See me and come live with me are two different things. See the face you cant see the heart. It just goes to say people will be people.
