BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands Party Candidate for District Six, Mr John M. Samuel is promising to put people first by investing in them and have the people invest in the economy as he campaigns under his ‘Samuel for the SIXTH’ slogan for the upcoming 2019 General Elections in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Mr Samuel spoke on his platform during a campaign launch to a packed and overflowing crowd at Island Sizzle (Beach Club) Parking Lot, in Baughers Bay, last evening January 31, 2019, and said he does not plan to borrow and squander money like the current government is doing.

I am not like NDP – Samuel

“I am not one of these red or blue-jacketed rushed generations who want to borrow and squander millions,” he told those gathered in referring to the Dr Smith led National Democratic Party (NDP 1) government.

Mr Samuel continued, “The red and blue jacketed rushed generation of the past 8 years that squandered and secreted millions of dollars out of the treasury, I am a member of the Virgin Islands Party, a patient, caring, diligent, nation-building team,” he implored.

He said the VIP's mandate insists that “we must not sell out our heritage, our lands, our birthright, and our future for personal gain, for personal fame or for personal legacies.”

“This party recognizes that the development and progress of a country without its people is not real progress,” he uttered.

He said it has become necessary to give serious consideration for district leadership and national leadership, since “Immediate steps must be taken to stabilize and diversify the economy [and] our economic dependence must be balanced with products in which British Virgin Islanders are vested.”

Building Together

According to Mr Samuel, in order for the territory to truly move forward, we must stand alongside our Caribbean brothers and sisters and rebuild the BVI nation that is ‘inclusive and beneficial’ for everyone calling the territory home.

He further said, “This decision we make at the poll does not just affect us personally, it decides the outcome of the country, [and] it decides our faith. These are challenging times where our social and financial freedoms are at risk at being lost,” he warned.

“We must invest in our people and have our people invested in our economy as stakeholders, owners and shareholders… our economy must be self-sustaining.”

He says when the VIP gets elected into government, they “must understand the primary needs of facilitating, legislating, and regulating and avoid whenever possible competing with you our partners in the private sector.”

He further spoke about the need to develop initiatives and pathways to transfer youths from the sidelines to active positions and said that all people must see and feel success and an improved quality of life under a VIP Government.

Nice poetry. Broadly touched on the intent of a VIP but specifics (prose) are needs on how things will happened, the timeline, how they will be paid for. For example, will taxes, fees........etc need to be raised to complete the projects? No individual alone can authorized and appropriated any funding for a project. It takes a majority of HOA voting to fund projects. Members must work within caucus to get things done in districts. We need to ditch the I will.......etc on the trail. It takes a team.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

I am so tired of this rhetoric. We KNOW what the NDP did. We were here. Same as you. Why does every other candidate feel the need to repeat this?

“Squander money” I have read from the VIP about bonuses for civil servants and more recently cost of living alowance. Civil servants already recieve a gov. pension without making any contribution and now two pay increase are proposed. We have too many civil servants, many of who are unproductive, phone at 11.00 “they are at lunch” call back 2.00 “ they are not back from lunch yet”
