ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The main actor behind the NHI Concerned Citizens and Residents Group, Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru, said that within the coming days, he will say what measures the Group plans to take now that the National Health Insurance (NHI) has gone ahead without any of the requested changes made as per a petition the Group had submitted on October 13, 2015.

On December 22, 2015, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith responded to the Group after a long silence to say that its views and suggestions have been noted and will be taken into consideration whenever possible.

Wheatley had called the Premier’s response unsatisfactory and vague and expressed disappointment that the government seemed not to be moved by the cries of the people of the territory.

“Furthermore, we remain deeply disappointed in the Premier's decision to continue practically undeterred by the cries of the people as pointed out by the NHI Concerned Citizens and Residents Group. We, the members of the group, offered a formula for achieving a most equitable and optimal system through the collaboration of the public, the business and corporate community and the public sector. We continue to believe that such an approach is an unbeatable one and one that will produce a win-win solution for all concerned. Unfortunately, by the Government's actions, it would seem they prefer the path of autocracy and dissension,” said Wheatley in a statement which was released following the Premier’s letter to the Group.

Wheatley wrote then that the Group had upped the ante by soliciting the intervention of the United Kingdom's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and were considering other options, including legal challenges and political action.

Asked over the weekend what is next for the Group following their dissatisfaction with the Premier’s response, Wheatley responded saying, “I will comment soon…in a few days.”

Meanwhile, registration for NHI has been proceeding steadly since the dawn of 2016, and while the crowd was hectic at the beginning of the year, the process seems to have improved somewhat even though it takes a person about two hours waiting just to get inside the building to register. Taking of photographs has been halted and is scheduled to recommence tomorrow Wednesday January 13, 2016.

young man ask yourself a serious question: who many persons in the territory actually signed up for NHI..you sound like a part time activist, while thousands of persons stood in line day after day after day to sign up for NHI you and your group should have been at that location distributing flyers or making your voice heard with your concerns... Must give you an "A" for effort however your level of conversation about NHI did not have much effect on most of general public...keep the faith black man!!!!

@ ... I can clearly recall the selling of the Cay to be that of a "done deal" until the people stood up against the administrators of the day and those protest resulted in that land being returned to the people of the territory....in all honestly back then there was a bit more togetherness...

Wize up you need to start to wise up before you type. If the Government tell you that you must sign up for the plan or else face fines, or lose your trade licence or permit will you not run to sign up? The people under duress so they must sign up.

I applaud Sowande for his persistence but this must be taken to a next level to gain results ie. protesting and legal recourse. The supreme law of the land is the constitution and no Government legislation can supersede it. I know that they are some serious legal implications with this NHI.

The recommendations seemed feasible and made sense if no changes at all were made or included you really have to ask, were our concerns really considered? Or they already knew they planned to move ahead as everything was already planned?

I am amazed at the level of thinking of some people in this territory. Mr. Wheatley is in a very sound battle for the benefit of the people of this territory. What is amazing is that because of political bias some people will not understand what is good for them and only accept what their leaders brainwash them with.
NHI is in need of many changes to some of the clauses and policies. No one knows it all and all Mr. Wheatley is trying to do is to enlighten the people of some of the ambiguities in the NHI. When some of the same people who are criticizing him start to feel the impact of the medical bills then and only then they will comprehend what Wheatley is saying. Good luck to those who are in darkness.

    Better get a move on.
NHI has never been thought out beyond how to get hold of the $46 Million government spent on health care each year.
This money is to be diverted to an airport and shared amongst well placed individuals.
    The thinking stopped there.
The people are now funding the health care through NHI tax.
The burden will be carried by the people through their earnings and the health staff through additional work.
