'I wasn't thinking!' Teen confesses to phone theft
Alton Pond, 19, pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods when he appeared before the Magistrate’s Court in John's Hole yesterday, October 1, 2013 after allegedly committing the offence on September 29, 2013 at Nanny Cay.
The defendant, a forklift operator, allegedly stole the iPhone which was valued at $700 which he reportedly found lying around the deck area of a boat. According to the allegations, the teen was reportedly seen on surveillance footage after committing the act.
Pond, who was unrepresented at the time, told the court that he denied the act several times to the arresting officer before eventually confessing. He added that he wasn't thinking while committing the offence.
Assistant Magistrate, Richard Rowe, told Pond he had placed a severe blight on the rest of his life in committing the alleged act. “From now on you will be known by the word criminal,” the Magistrate told Pond.
Pond was placed on $10,000 bail with one signed surety and a social enquiry report was ordered for the teen. An order was also issued for the return of the mobile phone.
He will next appear at the Prospect Reef court on October 10, 2013.
