The issue at the BVITB Virgin Gorda office was brought to light and it regarded the budget being taken away and the staff there left with no work to do to the extent that they have occupied their time by going back to school to further their studies. There were claims of scuffles involving senior management staff of the BVITB all of which the Premier seemed oblivious to based on his response at yesterday’s press conference. Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – “That’s a matter for the Tourist Board (TB)… they are the ones who control of the officers in that particular sector. We at central government give them a grant which they manage in a way that seems appropriate to them,” said Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith under whose portfolio the BVI Tourist Board falls.

This was part of Premier Smith’s response yesterday November 25, 2014 at his ‘One on One with the Press’ press conference held at his Office. The issues of the budgets being taken away from the Virgin Gorda BVITB’s office was put to the Premier. However he threw a blanket over it saying that he has not heard of the matter from the “horses’ mouth.”

“I cannot at this moment tell you how they are taking the management from Virgin Gorda, Anegada or where ever but I know that they board is comprised of serious business people who understand management and will do what is best the country,” said Premier Smith.

Asked specifically if he had heard any complaints as it relates to the situation specifically in Virgin Gorda, the Premier responded, “I listen to the board and the chairman, what they tell me and when they report that this thing has happened then I will take notice. Until then…”

The Premier said that one hears many things, “But you got to get it from the horses’ mouth before you can believe.”

This was not a problem that has been isolated to the BVITB but the complaint of sister islands staff – Jost Van Dyke, Anegada and Virgin Gorda - being sidelined and those from Tortola marching in and taking over.

Does this man ever have an answer ready for the people he serve? But then again when people in positions of power begin to think that they know more than the people they serve things go awry. He needs to step down immediately.
