I have to change my behaviour! - Hon. Fraser
The occasion though was the Sea Cows Bay Basketball Club’s District Summer League Awards, which doubled with the opening of the Christmas League on Saturday December 10, 2011 at the Belle Vue Gym. The event was moved to the indoor facility following the heavy rains that washed out Friday’s original schedule, which was due to be held on the newly renovated court in the 3rd District.
Honourable Fraser told the youths that he has been an ardent supporter of basketball but apologised for not being a regular at the games. “I probably took it as a game really, which I shouldn’t have and maybe I have to change my behaviour by coming to more games because you guys gave me a good whipping a little while ago on the court.”
The former Minister for Communications and Works told the players to encourage their parents to attend the games. “When you look at the NBA and football in the United States it didn’t happen by accident that the people you see on the court or field are there. Their parents invested a lot of time and a lot of money. Some of them even gave up their career to take their kids to the most popular spot for the games so I don’t see why we can’t do the same here.”
The representative also said he was certain that many of the players have aspirations to go beyond the Sea Cows Bay league. “I hear this is a warm-up for the BD Basketball League that is going to start in a few weeks but you don’t want to stop their either. You want to go on to college. We probably don’t have the facility here yet to have a college basketball team but I am sure that in St. Thomas or everywhere else you might go you will find that they have college basketball leagues but you have to be very good at what you do and that you get the proper start here.”
He further told the children to focus on teamwork and to play hard and promise his unwavering support. “We expect this league and Sea Cows Bay Basketball Club to be fruitful and I would be here to support you not only now but even after you would have left this league and gone on to college and come back to the Virgin Islands to work I would be here to support you.”
Speaking highly of Coach and Organiser of the Sea Cows Bay Basketball Club Mr. Milton McClean, Hon. Fraser expressed appreciation to him for his role in helping to develop the game in the Territory. “I don’t think you can find too many people in the VI who does what he does so you children ought to consider yourselves blessed to have him. People who don’t get paid for doing these kinds of things must be honoured, their efforts must be acknowledged and I would be one of those who will make sure that people like him gets his acknowledgement whenever it is appropriate to do so.”
Mr. McClean noted that he was pleased to organise games to help young people to focus and develop and also thanked Mr. Fraser for his support over the years and to Harney’s for their recent sponsorship.
