‘I did not get it done' but create a City Council for RT– Hon Vanterpool
“We realise that the city needs a city council. We moved to make it happen; it didn’t happen,” Hon Vanterpool said during the 2020 Budget Debate in the House of Assembly (HoA) on December 13, 2019.
Foundation laid
He said; however, he laid down the foundation for a city council.
“I went to Bermuda, I met with the major or the council some years back to get an idea of their council and their legislation and brought it back. And I know some draft (legislation) was done,” he remarked.
Hon Vanterpool argued that a City Council would bring benefits to the capital, Road Town
He said if established, it “can keep a focused eye on the development of the city as it plays an important role in the economy and paying attention to the social fabric of the Territory.”
The Opposition Member continued: “I do hope we can get to that point very quickly. I did not get it done, but I would like to see it done, and I want to give the minister my support to make it happen.
Hon Vanterpool further said there were ‘several plans’ for the development of Road Town and he is optimistic that these plans can be reviewed “so at least we can get on and make some of these things happen as were recommended in the past.”

City council is a great idea.
The territory comprises 59 square miles and Road Town is the only urban centre that's more than a village.
