ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Fourth District Representative and former Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool said despite not being successful during his tenure in office to establish a City Council for Road Town, he is hopeful that the incumbent Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Honourable Kye. M Rymer (R5) will make it a reality.

“We realise that the city needs a city council. We moved to make it happen; it didn’t happen,” Hon Vanterpool said during the 2020 Budget Debate in the House of Assembly (HoA) on December 13, 2019.

Foundation laid

He said; however, he laid down the foundation for a city council.

“I went to Bermuda, I met with the major or the council some years back to get an idea of their council and their legislation and brought it back. And I know some draft (legislation) was done,” he remarked.

Hon Vanterpool argued that a City Council would bring benefits to the capital, Road Town

He said if established, it “can keep a focused eye on the development of the city as it plays an important role in the economy and paying attention to the social fabric of the Territory.”

The Opposition Member continued: “I do hope we can get to that point very quickly. I did not get it done, but I would like to see it done, and I want to give the minister my support to make it happen.

Hon Vanterpool further said there were ‘several plans’ for the development of Road Town and he is optimistic that these plans can be reviewed “so at least we can get on and make some of these things happen as were recommended in the past.”

That is a great idea. Many other capital cities do have a council. There should not be one person managing a city. Put together a group of people who will look out for the interest of the capital and male it a better place.
City council is a great idea.

I don't think Bermuda should be our model. Also I echo the statement that Vanterpool had nearly a decade to do it, why is he barking out mandates now? Under him LE became a disgraceful slum and Road Town is ghetto. I won't shoot the messenger though, we should have a council indeed.

We don't need a top heavy government. Let these elected members do their jobs. City councils and mayors are for very large cities with the capacity many times of the whole BVI. What will he be paid for if there was a city council?

Does a jurisdiction as tiny as the VI seriously need an extra layer of government? Isn't a House of Assembly and all these Ministers and even Junior Ministers now enough?

The territory comprises 59 square miles and Road Town is the only urban centre that's more than a village.
