PURCELL ESTATE, Tortola, VI- Sixth District Representative and second term legislator Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines has made it known that she is not oblivious to the issues being faced by her constituents and other persons, including the deplorable state of some roads, and that she continues to lobby for them to be addressed.

Hon Maduro-Caines was at the time responding to our queries on the state of the road between Qwomar Trading Limited and Crystal Night Club and Bar in Free Bottom, on the main island of Tortola.

Persons have long complained about the deplorable state of that stretch of road and as recent as January 31, 2018 a trailer truck got stuck in one of the huge mud-filled potholes.

We had asked the Representative if she would have been able to say when residents and motorists would be able to get some relief with a fixed road.

“As you may be aware, the responsibility of anything having to do with repair of roads comes under the Department of Public Works, so it would be better that you speak directly to the head of that department if possible,” Hon Maduro-Caines responded today, February 2, 2018.

‘I am well aware’

She; however, said persons should be mindful that we are in a recovery process so everything that is being done is part of a bigger plan to make things happen in a timely and more effective manner possible.

“Where it relates to timing, only the government department responsible for those works in the recovery efforts can give that answer.  I am well aware of all of the problems plaguing my district and am in constant dialogue with the various departments to get things fixed,” Hon Maduro-Caines stated.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works Mr Anthony S. McMaster did not respond to our request for a comment on the road situation at Free Bottom.

We know she is not oblivious, she whines about it on facebook all the time - but what are her plans? What is she really doing about it?

When the people's man was there, we were facing these same set of problems and He was a minister and had more power. Someone asked what are her plans? If you were listening to her on different shows you would understand what her plans are. If she has no backing from her ministers, how the HELL you all expect her to get through with plans? I blame her government for not helping her get her plans through. Same thing A.Christopher did to Deloris a few years back. It's high time women be respected in government and shown the same kind of attention as men. Instead of trying to help this young lady who is trying, some of you just blabbing negativity. I give her an A for trying and sone of you a F- for talking fart.

It is no secret that back benchers, especially women, are treated like step children. For example, there are two women in the caucus but one could not even be appointed a junior minister. One is the Deputy Speaker and one got a likable do as as Acting MEC. Ops si do! Ok. Let’s look at the severely deteriorated condition of the roads. First the deteriorated condition started before Hurricane Irmaria. The condition of the road network is a national issue and should be handled as a national issue, not solely as a discrete district issue that is addressed only when VINO highlights the horrific condition. There needs to be a holistic approach to designing, constructing and maintaining the road network territory-wide.
