Huntums Ghut alleged gunman diagnosed with mental disorder!
The Virgin Islander appeared before Magistrate Tamia Richards yesterday May 29, but she did not allow him to plea until she can ascertain his mental state since the Psychiatrist report indicates he suffers from acute chronic psychosis/mental disorder.
According to Magistrate Richards, Section 10 of the Mental Health Act allows for a person to be evaluated and after eight days the court can either extend that time or continue legal proceedings against the defendant.
Weeks is charged with keeping an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
In reeling out the facts, Crown Counsel Janice Stoutt informed the court that on May 17, 2012, at around 5:55 p.m. the Road Town Police Station received a report of shots being fired in the Huntums Ghut area in the vicinity of Sandbox road.
“Officers responded and they meet Weeks’ father who told them that his son was at his residence discharging a firearm. Additional officers were called to assist,” the Crown Counsel stated.
She disclosed further that Inspector Potter was handed a cell phone “and was told that Weeks was on it.”
The court heard that the Inspector proceeded to have a conversation with the Huntums Ghut resident, who was given specific instructions to exit the residence, walk down to the public road “with his hands on his head”.The defendant complied.
He was handcuffed and taken back to the premises, Crown Counsel Stoutt continued, and was asked about the whereabouts of the firearm and the spent shells.
To which, Weeks allegedly replied, “I took it apart and put it inside the house...I pick up the shell and put them inside too”.
He then allegedly took officers to his bedroom where they observed two rounds of ammunition and two spent shells on a chest of drawers. On a second chest of drawers, he allegedly showed them a black travelling bag, and inside a black coloured ski mask and the lower grip of a silver coloured Mac Two 9mm semi- automatic pistol were uncovered. Furthermore, a buffer and a buffer spring of a firearm were found in a maroon bag.
Crown Counsel Stoutt revealed that inside another black travelling bag, a silver coloured firearm slide was unearthed with both sides, which carry the name and serial number, obliterated.
Police also found a brown card board box which contained a silver coloured container with 24 rounds of ammunition.
Following the find, Weeks was whisked away to the Road Town Police Station and then transported to Peebles Hospital where he was evaluated by two doctors.
According to the Crown, on May 18, 2012, Weeks was seen by Dr. June Samuels who diagnosed the defendant with acute chronic psychosis and at the time he was “actually hallucinating, paranoid and suspicious”.
And while a date is not set for Weeks to return to court, Magistrate Richards stated that the mental ward was the best place for him at the moment instead of being at home or on the streets.
