Up to late yesterday, detectives assigned to the Hunts Bay Criminal Investigation Branch were continuing their search for the man believed to have murdered District Constable Mellissa Edwards-Whyte at her home on Farmbrook Avenue, Patrick City, Kingston 20, Saturday night.

Police sources have identified the suspect as 53-year-old Barrington 'Drop' Whyte, of Farmbrook Avenue and Santa Hill district in Spaldings, Manchester.

According to the police investigators, they believe that Whyte, who neighbours say is the husband of the policewoman, may be able to assist them with investigations into the murder and they are asking him to turn himself in.

"He is a businessman, and there are not many places that he can hide, so we expect to arrest him shortly," said a police source.

Edwards-Whyte was fatally chopped during a dispute at her home about 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson yesterday condemned the murder of the district constable, who was assigned to Crime Stop.

"It is unfortunate that domestic violence has robbed us of another promising talent. Woman District Constable Mellissa Edwards-Whyte was met with such cruelty and callousness and no effort will be spared in bringing closure to this matter," said Anderson.

He added that the Chaplaincy and Community Safety and Security Branch have been instructed to provide all the necessary support to colleagues and friends of Edwards-Whyte.

"Members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) are also being reminded to use the resources available to the JCF, namely, the Chaplaincy and Medical Services Branch, to help through domestic and other issues which impact their emotional, psychological and physical well-being.

"Police officers are encouraged to remain vigilant and undaunted as we continue to enforce law and order and build safer communities. As a nation, we must bond together to preserve the rule of law, the safety, security, and human rights of every Jamaican," said Anderson.
