Over a month after the rift over the Leader of the Opposition post was settled by the UK-appointed governor John S. Duncan, OBE, the first time in VI history that a governor was forced to make such an appointment, Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) and Hon Andrew A. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands’ Parliament, officially called the House of Assembly, the highest law making body in the tiny overseas territory of 35, 000 people, will meet at its chambers in the capital city Road Town this week.

The meeting will take place on Thursday September 3, 2015 and is expected to commence at 10am.

While the Order Paper has not been released, it remains unclear if the Virgin Islands Party’s (VIP) 2-man Opposition has questions for the government’s front bench ministers.

The public has not heard from the Opposition Members on the controversial National Health Insurance (NHI), a programme pushed by the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) government.

Critics say the NHI will severely hurt small businesses, forcing them to close and not allow people to choose their own doctors while forcing them to give up their existing private health insurance.

They also claim the programme will force persons at the lower end of the pay scale to sink into poverty. Last week, the powerful Insurance Association of the BVI (IABVI) accused the government of lying about the figures.

They claim that once NHI comes on board there will be staff layoffs, and that the scheme does not cover all the health insurance needs of the territory. It further said that due to the cost of NHI, most residents will not be able to afford top-up or supplementary insurance plans.

Opposition divided

The sitting on September 3, 2015 will be the second since the House of Assembly was able to have an Opposition Leader who was appointed on July 21, 2015 by Governor John S. Duncan, OBE.

Following the 2015 general elections, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (D1) led an attempted coup against Hon Julian Fraser RA, (D3) in which he got some six (6) losing VIP candidates from the June 8 general elections, plus himself, to sign a petition to the Governor supporting Fahie for the Leader of the Opposition post.

Governor Duncan eventually appointed the Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party, Hon Fraser, to the post of Opposition Leader.

Now over a month since that rift was settled by the UK-appointed governor, the first time in VI history that a governor was forced to make such an appointment, Hon Fraser and Fahie are gearing up to do battle this week yet again- this time over the post of Chairman of the VIP.

The party’s internal election is due on September 2, 2015 and it will be a Fraser vs Fahie affair.

Our news room will be the first to bring more accurate details on the House of Assembly sitting set for September 3, 2015 once the Order Paper is released.

Virgin Islands News Online could also be relied on for the full results of the VIP internal elections.

it will be nice if someone can remind the Hon Fahie/Fraser that they were voted into office by the people of this territory: that they need to speak out and speak up on the social issues affecting this community... just saying

Let the VIP play stupid and give the chairmanship the leadership again; NDP will be laughing all the way through the next election. Why? The results will be the same or better for the NDP.
